Greetings all :) I'm new to the forums and have been playing the bass for 5 years. I am from the Philippines. As you can imagine, the bass choices here leave me with limited options. I recently just bought a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass and have been happy. Though at the moment I'm looking at another bass.

As the title suggests it's about the Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass. I am unsure as to how many basses hold that name but I am referring to the one that costs $749.50. There is absolutely no way for me to test this bass myself as my only option is to order it online. I am a complete newbie to the world of active pickups and electronics. I have done my research but the information I gained wasn't very specific.

My question is: Is this one of those basses where the pickups completely shut down when you run out of battery? I heard from different sources that it simply switches to "passive mode" when it does. I myself find this to be a very convenient feature. That would mean it is referring to active electronics, am I correct?

The shipping and tax costs are insane here so this is as high as I can get at the moment. I have this fear of the bass running out of battery live  Any information would be appreciated :D

cheers,

Angelo

You were misinformed. In stock configuration this instrument is silent when there is no battery power. There is no passive/active switch either. You can have an experienced tech install a passive/active switch but doing so voids the warranty if there is a warranty there. The battery will last a very long time in these but having no passive bypass makes an instrument less likely to go to a gig with me. That is why I gig mostly with passive instruments. In most active instruments with a passive/active switch, in passive mode only the volume control does anything and the tone can not be adjusted at all.

I love active tones for some things, but hate the battery hassles. I like the active tones on this instrument and it is a pretty good value as is the active P-Bass Deluxe. I think I like the tones of the P-Bass Deluxe better since there is more variations possible.

Thank you very much for the information. Is there a particular bass with this feature though? I was hoping somewhere around $800 or less. The cheaper the better I guess, but I won't skimp on quality :D

It's because the battery lasts a long time that worries me (weird huh?). I wouldn't know when to change it until it's too late :( The P-Bass Deluxe is the one with a jazz pickup on the bridge right? Does that bass have a passive mode?

Hi again Angelo,

No the P-Bass Deluxe doesn't have an active/passive switch either.

The only ones I know of with an active/passive switch are the American Deluxe Jazz Bass and the American Deluxe Precision Bass. There maybe others but those are the only two I know about. They are more than $800 though as top of the line production instruments.

Many many thanks for the very useful information! :) I guess it might be worth saving up now since I'd rather own one lifetime bass than one I'd replace later on. Did my homework and yes it looks great. Time to start getting a job :P

Sorry mispoke. Should have said the Deluxe Series P-Bass Special, not P-Bass Deluxe.
