Hey Guys.

So, I am a beginner Bass player. I started messing around and learning a bitt about bass at my church, and I have been getting better. I really want to buy a Bass of my own, and I think that Fender is the way to go!

BUT...I need to know from people that know...
In terms of playability, and performance, would you prefer a P Bass, or a Jazz Bass?
I am leaning towards Jazz bass, based on things that I have read.
But I need to know more.

Thanks!

Hey T-bird.. I would recommend the jazz bass for a few reasons. First the neck is only 1.5 inches at the nut making it easier to play than the precision which has 1.65 in. Second, the 1/4 jack on the jazz is incorporated into the control plate and not the pickguard like on the precision thereby making it a little more rugged and less likely to break. Third, the jazz will give you more tonal control because you have 2 pickups instead of one offset. For a beginner I would recommend you buy the new Squier jazz bass. It's getting good reviews and for $250 it's a solid starter instrument.

Alright, this has been covered all over both forums, and the Squier forums too. Play both back to back, on the same amp, pref the same set up you own! This is key, sound wise, you can have the best of both P or J, if your rig can't complement the sound of the bass, it will just be that, sounding how you rig will amplify it. Which ever one feels comfotable for you is the one to get. Your amp can make the tonal variance, off course the bass set up will do so, but if your amp can't, it will only sound they way you set it up. I preffer Jazz bass, but I like both pups, my '87 has both p/j set up. I've always used both all the way up, set my eq on my amp, but I play straight through, w/o any effects, since the head I have has a compressor function too. Good luck trying 'em out.

Badfender, I've had Pbasses before, as far as the jack in the control plate or the pick guard, I've never had any. The only jack issue I've ever had was on my Urge(Stu Hamm model) and that was on the contour of the body, the soldering came off.

At the store I bought my Lee bass, there is a pre-owned Highway One Jazz on the rack. I may have bought it had I played it before the Lee bass. I love the GL model, but every time I am in the store I find myself playing that H1 bass.

If I hide it in my office, my wife may never know.....

Go with a Jazz bass. It's great to learn on, and you'll never need a better bass. Ever.

The Jazz Bass is a good all-around bass. Can't go wrong. I personally use Precision Basses more often but that's just me. I like both.

You should take a look at the Squire Jazz basses, especially their new vintage modified (all maple, natural finish, black inlays on the neck). They're less than $300 but play well and sound pretty good, and seem durable enough.

It depends what style you want...

P-basses are abit more trebly to my ears and have a great neck,
but jazz basses are alot more versatile in terms of sounds and styles.
i have one of each and use the jazz most!

Also check out Some of the more unusual basses like Jaguars and mustangs cause they have abit more character!

Trebly? Great neck?

Those are the exact opposite comments you usually hear about P-Basses! :D Generally speaking, people prefer P-Basses for their greater bottom end over the Jazz Bass, but others prefer the thinner Jazz neck.
