I'm most probably going to get the DVD. I saw a documentary of The Funk Brothers about 2 years ago it was done in 2005, there were interviews with the surviving members (some who have since passed on... worth checking out if you get the chance)

However the Book that I bought, came out in 1989, it's a James Jamerson biography & comes with 2 CD's that feature performances by Will Lee, Gerald Veasley, Pino Palladino, Geddy Lee, John Entwhistle, Phil Chen, Jimmy Haslip, Marcus Miller, Jack Bruce, Chuck Rainey & a few others all performing Motown songs that James Jamerson played on........
& yes there's definately been a multitude od players who've been influenced by Jamerson.

It is a great book. Think about it like this. The electric bass is a young instrument relatively speaking (almost 70 years as opposed to hundreds of years for the upright). Motown and music of that vintage is the closest we have to a "Classical Repertoire" for our instrument. Jamerson, Rainey, Duck Dunn etc. are really the ones who invented the way we play. Everything that's come since has been built on what these players started.

I have the dvd, it's definitely a must see. I've seen the book, which inspired the dvd. As you said, Rev, they created what we do.

Yeah I wasn't a Joan Osborne fan until seeing her do that old classic stuff in "STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN." Now I buy all her CD's. Her "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" is my favorite version of that song now. Oddly from my perspective, it didn't get nominated for a Grammy but should have. Chaka Kahn's "What's Going On"in the film not only got nominated but also won the Grammy that year for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance by a male or female. Quite an accomplishment considering all the studio tracks it was up against.

I thought Alan Slutsky did a fantastic job on the book and he also did the arranging for the concert and studio footage in the film. He conducted the orchestra and appeared in some of the other footage. This film was his idea and he's even largely responsible for securing the financing to make the film happen. The "concert" footage was filmed at the height of a winter storm meaning lots of those scheduled to appear couldn't get to Detroit, so substitutions were made. I don't think Bootsy Collins was actually supposed to sing that much. But he added some comic relief.

They could have turned up the bass a little during some segments. I can barely hear Bob Babbit. Other than that..I'm thankful such a movie exists on Motown/other labels featuring the Funk Brothers.

That happens when you try to play a B-15 live.
