Try every roundwound brand you can. Experiment. Enjoy coated strings and all the other fancy stuff. Take advantage of 2 for 1 offers, 50% off discounts etc.

Then, when you've had your fun and played the field, come back to Rotosound. And say sorry for all the cheating.

Yes you can always come back to Rotosound & say sorry..... but you may also feel cheap & dirty with a bit of remorse for cheating... ...LOL

nrlincoln,

That's some rig you have. no doubt you're very happy with it's sound.

Are you reffering to my SWR Rig? ........Thanks I'm pretty happy with it & ya know my MXR M80 DI is a nice add on to the rig for that extra.... OOOMPH!! :) I'm also going to be getting an MXR M87 Bass Compressor in the next couple of weeks for that finishing touch. I'm also still gonna be getting a Bronco 40 for practicing etc..

Actually, I was referring to nrlincoln's rig, I can't recall ever knowing what you played through until now. Of course I'm envious, as is every bass guitarist who wants to play through everything.

Yours sounds great James.

For the sound you're looking for, I always used Rotosound to achieve it, more than any others. As far as life, they hold up rather well, I make it a point to wash my hands thoroughly before i play, maybe it's me, but I think it helps.

I remember an interview with John Entwistle (print - in a magazine - the internet did not exist at that time). He stated that he felt sorry for those poor souls stuck using Rotosounds. The Ox was not a man to mince words. I used Rotosounds when they were the only roundwound bass string I could get, and because Chris Squire used them.

They are the absolute screechiest; tin-can high end ugly zingiest and damn near the most repulsive roundwound string on planet Earth.

What's worse you might ask? That's easy - anything Ernie Ball. Hands down the most ugly unmusical bass strings ever. Blech!

GHS Boomers fall inbetween. I will never ever buy anything Rotosound; GHS, or Ernie Ball again. Don't waste your time or money.

Hmmm.........interesting concidering Rotosound still mentions his name & his mug is on the back of the RB Roto Bass series of Strings in a collage featured with other bassists......... do you know what strings he favoured? :)

John Entwistle never said in that particular article what strings he used. He was very clearly unhappy with Rotosound (moreso the compay I think than the actual string), and made damn sure the reader knew it.

It really made quite an impression on me: a 20-something bass player that very much liked and respected JE's work along with: Greg Lake; Chris Squire, and of course, Paul McCartney.

I was playing Rotosounds at the time, and it wasn't until I tried Dean Markley's 'Blue Steels' that I changed. Good sounding strings with lots of 'meat'. I left Rotosound, never to return.

This is from thewho.net

1989–2001:

Maxima Gold gold-plated handmade strings, changed daily.
From the August 1989 Guitar Player

The big news is that Rotosounds will not be accompanying the Buzzards on their transcontinental flight. After pioneering the development of roundwound strings with that company in the ’60s and in the process becoming virtually synonymous with the name and the sound, Entwistle has switched to handmade Maxima gold-plated strings. “They sent me a set to try out, and I really liked them. I found that with the proper action on my basses, I could tune the E string as low as an A and still achieve a true tone. I tried to get Rotosound to explore that direction a year ago and they ignored me, and then came out with a set specially gauged by Billy Sheehan that will tune down to a D! So I got fed up. Billy Sheehan and Mark King can sell Rotosounds; I’m very happy with Maximas.”

From April 1995 Bassist interview

“I had been trying to find a decent low B string for the bass and we experimented with Rotosound but didn’t have any luck. A lot of our songs at the time were in C and D, not good keys for bass because you can’t get a good hit of a low C or D, although it isn’t as bad as, say, Eb. I tried de-tuning the Rotosound strings but they lost all their tonal quality. I was then given some gold-plated Maximas to try out about six years ago. While I was putting the first set on and tuning up, I played a low C and it was perfect. It still had the same amount of top end and the tonal quality hadn’t dropped. They had developed a new type of core which was hexagonal or octagonal and you could tune an E string down to a low A and it would still vibrate well. It was those de-tuning possibilities that turned me on to Maxima, plus being gold plated, they looked better with gold hardware and didn’t disappear under the lights on stage.”

2001–2002:

Rotosound Swing Bass strings, changed daily.

 There you go. You're on top of it, oxfan.

I've never even seen much less played maximas. Do they even still exist? Have you played them?

I think I've read everything about John that there is, at least I've tried, and never pass on an opportunity to find some new stuff.

I've never tried the Maxima strings, as I am just plain cheap. I'm actually frugal in the respect that I get the most bang for a buck. I refuse to pay list for anything.

The way he changed strings daily, you'd think there would be some available somewhere. I could really use a framed John Entwistle string for my game room wall.

I've played since the sixties. My major mark was as a lead guitarist is a fairly successful band. After we split, badly, I got married, had a daughter and gradually put it all in my past. I toyed with bass as needed, the bad taste of the six string wouldn't go away.

Five years ago I made a quality decision to become a bass guitarist, not a bassplayer. For the next two years, I completely immersed myself in John Entwistle. Every version of every song he played on, every video, every article.

I found that as I got to know the man, the easier his style and technique came. When I say I was obsessed, I mean it. I wouldn't even listen to anything else. His ability was such a reach (at the time) that there were times I was convinced that I'd never truly master his technique.

There! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :D

The point of all that? I miss him a lot, I always wonder what he would have achieved.

I was shocked & saddened when I heard John had passed in 2002 & angry because it was an accidental overdose...... He was an early influence on my playing, I was lucky to see him live with The Who in Montreal in 1980 when I was 16 & then again in Toronto in August 1989...........both shows were truely amazing....... there were 68,000. at the Toronto show as it was an outside event & I was luck to be 20 rows from the stage, I remember leaving that show saying to myself WOW!!
