OK fellow Fender Bassmen and Basswomen,

I have a new Fender American Standard Jazz and the stock Fender strings are about half dead.

I like Thomastik-Infeld's Jazz Flats and have them on my Precision. I have never tried their roundwound Power Bass strings. Yes they are expensive.

I do like DR strings in general and Fat Beams specifically.

I have used Rotosounds in the past, and never again. I am not a fan of GHS or Ernie Ball, but state your case if that is your enlightened choice.

I have never played coated strings. I understand the positives. Yet, I am reluctant. State your case.

Have Fun - Play Fair - Have At It!

Lately I've been a fan of DR Bootzillas. They are the first coated strings that I've tried and in my regular practice I run a gamut of styles from Death Metal, to Afro Cuban, to Funk, to Old School Jazz Funk a`la Jaco and Stanley Clarke. Combined with my Jazz bass they give me a classic yet modern tone.

Stay Brown,
Rev J

I may be in the minority but...

Still like the old Rotosound. In particular.. Rotosound RN 66LD Nickels.
The nickels are a little easier on the fingers and, at least to my ears, a little less bright.

..Have been considering trying the DR family. Have heard good things about the High Beams.

As I posted earlier......for me it's Rotosound Rotobass 45's (they're basically unsilked Swing Bass Strings) or DR Fat Beams.

I'm also considering switching to either DR Lo-Beams or DR Sun Beams for my Jaco Fretless, both sets apperantly work well on Fretless basses...... I'm currently using Fender Flats on the Fretless...

I like Ernie Ball because they are much cheaper than other brands and they have a bright sound. For a less bright solid sound I like the Blue Steel

Blue Steel are good strings ........from what I can remember, ( I went through a phase from 1987 - 1993 where I used them exclusively) I then Returned to Rotosound & have been using them ever since........but as I posted earlier... I also like DR Fat Beams.

I love Roto sound but I found the high's died quickly. Blue Steel had less highs but they kept their tone longer perhaps due to their freezing process.

Yeah that is true I also find that that the highs do somewhat die quickly.

I also used Dean Markley's 'Blue Steels' when they first came out in the '80's and liked them far better than the Rotosounds they replaced. I do not like the ultra-high end zing of some rounds. Most sound like tin cans. Very unmusical & ugly.

I am looking for very pure; full, & round piano like tone. Tight smooth windings for the very least amount of string screech.

I found that the Fender 8250-5M strings that came stock on my 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 string bass had the full round piano tone effect but it didn't last long. (with in about 3 weeks the strings started sounding flat.)

I was looking at this stringset too: "Fender® Original 7150's Pure Nickel strings deliver a smooth feel with reduced finger noise. The tone is rich and warm with abundant harmonics, while still offering great clarity. These strings are perfect for blues, jazz, R&B and classic rock." The pure nickel wrap is something I like in the Tomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats that I keep on my Precision.

I have the stock Fender 8250M set on now and they sounded pretty good, but do go downhill quickly. They hold tune very well once they are played in.

For the sound you're looking for, I always used Rotosound to achieve it, more than any others. As far as life, they hold up rather well, I make it a point to wash my hands thoroughly before i play, maybe it's me, but I think it helps.

Try every roundwound brand you can. Experiment. Enjoy coated strings and all the other fancy stuff. Take advantage of 2 for 1 offers, 50% off discounts etc.

Then, when you've had your fun and played the field, come back to Rotosound. And say sorry for all the cheating.

Yes you can always come back to Rotosound & say sorry..... but you may also feel cheap & dirty with a bit of remorse for cheating... ...LOL
