My favorite single coils are the Nordstrand NJ4, Seymour Duncan Antiquity II, and the ones in my Select Jazz...

My favorite split coils are Fralin, and Dimarzio Model J

My Jazz came stock with Custom Shop pickups. I love their tone. I'll never change them. They're perfect. :)

I chose Fender's Custom Shop '60s set for my home-built Jazz Bass......

Vintage vibe all the way!

That turned out great!! Loving the LPB finish, and neck inlays.

What is the difference between the old and new?

Thanks!

I should clarify though......where I indicated "home-built" I should have specified home-assembled. The parts were all purchased individually on Ebay and everything is genuine Fender except for the Allparts tuxedo neck.

I think the Lace Sensors Fender used in the early 90's sounded great. You know, your turning the knob deciding yes or no...whole bunch of "yesses".

Tone Rider TRJ-1 are also excellent pickups and are pretty cheap too... and my most favorite is the Aguilar AG 4J-60

All my basses have stock pickups in them, ...3 Jazz basses with Vintage single coil pickups, also an American Deluxe with N3 Noiseless pickups, a P bass with Seymour Duncan SP1 pickups & my P/J set up Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass has an American Standard P Bass pickup & a Custom noiseless Jazz pickup......... This bass is a recent purchase & is fast becoming my go to Bass....it's a great sounding bass thats rarely mentioned or discussed here in the Fender Lounge........ :)

I mentioned this before elsewhere, but I'll repeat just for grins and giggles...

My 1986 Power Jazz Bass Special is stock... I need it that way for a particular sound for a couple items in our playlist.

However, my 2011 MIM Fender Jazz Bass has the DiMarzio Ultra Jazz DP-149 pickups. This pickup set completely eliminates single coil hum while using only ONE volume control, broadens the frequency response range - as compared to the stock pickups, and has a 250 millivolt output that produces rumbling lows out of a mid powered amp without the need to lug around an 80 pound combo to some gigs. The DiMarzio DP-149 pickups made my Fender Jazz Bass into a real performer rather than just a run of the mill bass.

I have an American Deluxe Jazz which still has the stock N3 Noiseless pickups. I am considering replacing them with vintage passive pickups.

Have you ever given the Dimarzio Model J or Dimarzio Area J pickups a try? Both are very nice offerings that are noiseless as well. The Model J has great low mids, very thick sound for a jazz pickup. However, it doesn't have a lot of clarity. the Area J sounds close to a single coil pickup.
