 P bass - P bass?! What IS a P bass?
I like the jazz better for the tonality variables, choices, the bridge edge / growl, that single coil sound. It feels more comfortably balanced when I play.
I guess that is about it but it makes all the difference to me.

Used to be the neck, but I'm over that now. I can play both widths happily now.

The main thing is the tonal variety.

Having said that my next bass will be a MM Stingray, which I like to think of as the P Bass version 2 in a way so I guess I can't say I really prefer either now! :)

Tone, feel, aesthetics (the offset waist contour rules, in my opinion), tradition & the weigth of history (Jamerson, Butler, Dunn, Harris, etc. are awesome players but I just think that Jaco, Marcus Miller, Me'Shell Ndegeocello and Geddy Lee are Gods)... The P-Bass is an excellent instrument, but I prefer the J since in my opinion it is a little more advanced in terms of design and sound.
I read comments on the "baseball bat" P-Bass neck and don't agree with that statement at all. The P is fun to play, but I prefer the Jazz neck as I've gotten used to playing it and enjoy the way my fingers roam the fretboard a bit more.

Having learnt on Ibanez SR basses, the P Bass neck just seemed colossal to me. The J flows like the Ibanez, but has real tone!

I ove the thin neck on the jazz bass. it makes it so much easier to play than a p bass. i also love the versitality of the 2 pickups vs the p bass's 1

I have one of each. I have been playing a 1978 PBass for over 20 years. HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY but what an awesome sound and for me being a woman, I can handle that thick neck pretty good. Its all I knew until last month.

Then I bought my dream bass....an American Standard Jazz bass fretless neck. Brand spankin' new!!! It is SO much lighter and the neck is WAY thinner. Very easy to play and I like the finish on the back of my Jazz better than the PBass. The PBass is old school...has that clear finish on it and sometimes your hand tends to stick to it if you are sweaty or if you are playing outside in the humidity.

I love both basses. The PBass "feels like home" but the Jazz bass is a welcomed change. I play the Jazz more now and why not? At this stage of the game for me (I'm not getting any younger), the PBass totally wears me out after a night of gigging. I will take both to gigs because I have certain songs that I like playing the PBass on and certain songs that I like to play the Jazz on.

Plus I look SO cool having 2 beautiful American made Fenders on that stage!! :D

It really depends on what style you are playing. A P-Bass is good for heavy medal and blues. It has a good punch on the lower notes compared to the Jazz Bass. But the Jazz Bass is good for slap and many other styles. It also has a more comfortable neck. It all depends on your playing style.

The neck and body contour. I find it balances very well and leads to more comfortable playing for me.

I should've gotten a P-Bass. Oh well, I like the jazz because of it's tone though. I love the tone you get out of the vintage pups.

For me it's several reasons. One, is simply I like they way they look better.

Two, the person who taught me to play did so on a mid 60's Jazz..and it was sweet so I am naturally biased.

Three..I like having 2 pickups for versatility. For example if I just use the bridge pup it sounds similar to my musicman stingray..which costs 3-4 times what my Jazz does. Both pups great "round" sound for funk and slapping. Middle pup good for getting a heavier sound although not as heavy as my P-bass.

But in all fairness I have a kinda rare P-bass special from the mid 90's which utilizes a J-pup at the bridge..and a P-pup in the middle..as well as an active circuit with bass boost/cut, treble boost/cut similar to a Fender USA Prodigy (another rare oddball fender). Also has 22frets vs. the 20 on my Jazz (not that I play up there too often really). It also has a main volume where as with the Jazz I have 2 volumes to deal with..not that big a deal but sometimes when I need to do volume "swells" I am limited to using only one pup.

But you asked why we prefer a jazz over a precision....ok, I'll sum it up.

IMO it Looks cooler and offers more tonal choices over a standard P-bass (although not as heavy sounding)

I don't like them better. I like my 1976 PBass and my 1978 Jazz Bass equally. Which one I use depends on the sound I am looking for. I also love my Alembic 5 string.
