I recently bought my first bass guitar, which makes an unpleasant electrical hum when I turn up one of the tone knobs. The noise goes away if I touch the strings.

The salesman in the shop I bought it in claims this is normal - but it sounds terrible and means I have to play with the tone knobs dialled down if I want to get a decent sound. So basically instead of me getting a service, I was sent packing.

I've looked on forums and discovered that this may be due to a grounding issue. Whatever it is, I would really like to get it sorted out.

What would you recommend?

Yep. You touching the strings makes you the ground. Take it to a technician for a fix. I'd also suggest getting your bass properly sheilded at the same time. If you can afford it dumpsterize all the cheap controls and install quality American electronics. Your technician will know what to do. :)

 If you want your one stop at the shop to do you right get a professional set-up at the same time. New strings never hurt. 8)

Jazzes do make a hum when you back off one of the pickups-- it's not as bad depending on certain criteria involving home/bar wiring and how fwr you are from the amp or if you are facing the amp etc etc...-- Jazz will hum.
