love your own tone as well...

I personally spent months to find a perfect setting/set up to capture the tone. Just like the pros, I dont think they really care much about brands nor equipments as long as it sounds good to them.

Not to sound like I'm name dropping/advertising gear but......

I play a Steve Bailey Jazz bass that I've strung with either DR Marcus Miller or Bootsy Collins strings. I've tried that set up through a Markbass Jeff Berlin combo and my tone didn't have any elements of any of those players. It sounded great, but it also still sounded like me. I'd like to try it with a Markbass Alain Caron combo since I liked the tone with a sixer that they had in stock at my local shop mainly because I'd like to hear what my six sounds like through an amp that was co-designed by a six string bass player.

Dee Murray in Elton's best band (Nigel, Davey, Ray Cooper). Dee played for the song, and his playing was informed by jazz, tuba, and rock. I love his playing on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, arguably Elton's best album.

OMG, talking about great Fender Jazz Bass players and nobody mentions Noel Redding? Come on peoples! Anybody that could keep up with Hendrix live deserves a mention! So there it is.

Someone mentioned Me'shell Ndegeocello earlier. I really appreciate all her talents. Playing electric bass is just one of them. Unlike some of the people mentioned in this thread she actually does play a Fender Jazz a great deal of the time, especially in the studio. She has an old sunburst Jazz (63 body/64 neck) and records with it a lot. But she has a multitude of other basses she plays out live including a Reverend and of course the Les Paul from the "Wild Night" video which sounds to me remarkably like a '63 Jazz on the recording. It doesn't sound like a Gibson at all to me on that recording. So far as I know she doesn't have any instrument endorsement deals which frees her up to play any bass she wants anywhere she wants, but she has had an amp endorsement deal with Ampeg for ages.

How are Spammers like Sxdxdx getting junk posts posted & Fender is not catching & deleting the posts as it happens?.......This has been going on for a month & is upsetting as I get notified via email when someone replies to a topic I've commented on......I recieved 5 notifications this morning from 5 different topics & 3 of them are from this Spammer who's left spam posts on several topics......Hope this gets taken care of soon.
