Oooppps!!! my mistake yes you're correct Jaco used swing bass strings on his fretless....... apperantly he also used a fretted Jazz bass to practise with because the round wound swing bass strings would eat up the fretboard on his fretless.... :)

Easy mistake to make. I still think the thing with Robert Trujillo sucks, why does he need the money.

there was an instructional video saying he practices jazz basses with precision bass neck, for his hands to "stretch", is that really effective? :?:

....my Steve harris P bass has a thick neck & when I've warmed up or practised on it & then switch to a jazz bass ..... I do notice the difference....going back to the Jazz bass is like going from a car to a race car.........just my opinion.

This is a fun thread for a first post. :)

I'm an avid blues fan, so my first choice is Johnny B. Gayden (Albert Collins' main bass man for 20 plus years). IIRC he has seven Fender Jazz basses in his collection.

I loved Jaco's tone. The tone he achieved on his Bass Of Doom was incredible. I still listen to his work with Weather Report after all these years.

I also like Marcus Miller and would like to have a MM signature 4 string.

Aside from basses and gear though, these great players' hands are a major part of their tone.

+1

love your own tone as well...

I personally spent months to find a perfect setting/set up to capture the tone. Just like the pros, I dont think they really care much about brands nor equipments as long as it sounds good to them.

Very true. Many pickup changes, until I recently decided that I actually prefer the tone of single coil pickups. The rest of my tone comes from a variety of elements; some light compression, strings, amp settings. I prefer Jazz basses, and no matter how often I try to buy other types/brands of basses, I always revert back to a passive jazz. In the past year, I bought a Ric, Bongo, P bass, and Stingray (2 actually), and ended up returning each within the 30 day return policy window. Part of it being a compulsive issue, but mainly because I find that Jazz basses are "home."
