I play in a post-hardcore/alternative band and we tune to C# Standard and Dropped B. I want the string tension to be somewhat tight (similar to 45-105 in standard tuning). I just put on GHS Boomers Heavy Gauge (50-115) and I'm unimpressed with the tone and the tension isn't much tighter than the 105 I had on there before. I considered just buying a 5-string pack, but I want to avoid re-slotting the nut at all costs. Any suggestions? Thanks.

buy a peddle that tunes you down automatically. I played thru one and you can go as low as you want electronically and then you don't have to do anything to your bass. No different strings and tune to normal 440 then plug in the box and turn it (pedal) however low you want it to go. You can tune it down all the way to Neanderthal Post Punk Thrash.

Yeh I know-- it's so low that people in China think it's "up". :D

try raising the bridge saddles to increase the tension...
high tension strings I'd recommend Rotosound and DR Lo Riders

Thanks for the suggestions. I decided to take a risk and bought DR High Beams Medium for a 5-string bass (45-125) and put them on. They fit the nut perfectly. I tried just leaving off the 45, but the 65 had way too much tension and I was worried about the long term effects on the neck so I swapped it out for the 45. The tension, tone, and intonation are great with these strings for what I'm doing.

necks do move a lot, i live in a very humid place.. so neck changes once in a while ... it's normal though.. don't be afraid to use medium gagues besides your drop tuning... and check your saddles and action try to keep it a little low... to make the neck feel more relaxed
