hi,
over the weekend i had one of my speakers toppled, knocking my national into my 62" jazz bass "replica". the bass sustained a gouge & finish chip to the underside edge. i paid 2 grand for this bass guitar. does anyone have an idea of the repair cost involved? i would imagine that fender would have to do it because of the authentic materials used to acheive the "replica" statis. who should i contact? the custom shop?
bummed out,

This apparently has you a bit distraught, and for that I sympathize. If it makes you feel any better, I value every ding, scratch, stain, etc. my basses undertake in their lives. I earned those. Like me, they experience life and show the life they've lived.

Fender does not commonly repair damaged instruments unless a warranty-claim issue is involved, which clearly in this case it's not. You're better off to find a local luthier skilled in wood repair and refinishing procedures.

Arjay is right - Fender doesn't do restorations or refinishing, so you'd have to find an independent shop or an individual capable of doing the work.

If it affects play, get it done. If it is cosmetic, ignore it and play. When the cumulative wear and tear takes its toll over the years, you can get the whole thing refinished if you want a like new finish. If not, it is even more relic-ed.

A National what fell over? A National Bank? A National Amp? A National steel guitar? A National dobro? Photo of the damage would be interesting. I remember a huge National bass amp cab and tube head from the late 60's/early 70's. If that fell on it then I can see it needing some restoration.

I'm guessing you mean a 62 American Vintage Reissue Jazz Bass. I'm not familiar with a Replica model. If the damage is major enough that you think you need to repair it, the cost will vary depending on who you get to repair it and their level of expertise. Top shops are more expensive and usually that will be for more than one reason. However the most expensive estimate isn't always the most skilled repair shop but usually is the busiest. That usually means they are competent.

Any refinishing will lower resale value long term if it ever becomes collectible. However few if any of today's models, even the Fender Vintage Reissues, will become collectible in our lifetimes because there are just so darn many of them. So it probably won't matter in your lifetime if you refinish it, however 60 years from now, who knows?

+1

With factories in several countries now running double shifts, they crank them out like disposable dixie cups.

:(
