Seems I read nothing but praise about it. I was thinking about picking up a new 08 American Standard Jazz but now I'm thinking I might get the Geddy instead. The Am. Standard is a little more but comes with a hardshell case, so adding the case to the Geddy makes them about the same pricewise.

Any thoughts/opinions either way out there?

I think it's an awesome bass. I love the vintage look of the GL sig. As far as cases go, you can hagle it at the local music store and still come out ahead compared to the Am Standard as far as $$$ goes. I got a used Fender case for $40. I use it on my Squier.

Yeah I prefer vintage looking instruments too.

I am thinking about getting a new Jazz bass and am looking at the Geddy Lee. I like how it looks(black and maple) and all I see are great reviews for it. I haven't tried an American Standard J yet, but I dig the GL.

I've tried both at a local Guitar Center. The new 08 Am. Std. Jazz has a rounder C neck, whereas the Geddy neck is flatter. And the Geddy has the polyurethane finish, while the Am. Std. has the thinner nitrocelulose finish. I liked both, but its perhaps the vintage look of the Geddy that draws me a wee bit more. However, I may just bite the bullet and get a Custom Shop Jazz; still something about the Geddy bass keeps grabbing my attention.

I'm really fond of my Lee bass.

The only thing I have that seems like a defecit is that the tuners don't seem as substantial as my 60s Jazz.

Otherwise, it rocks.

I'm thinking either I'll keep saving for a Custom Shop reissue Jazz Bass or maybe take the "cheap" option with this one -- have to play it a few more times before making up my mind but I really liked it in the store.

I used to own a '74 Jazz that looked exactly like the Getty Lee. In a matter of about 2 years the neck looked like a banana. Of course that was due to my own ignorance about taking care of my instruments. It's an awesome bass that plays very nicely and sounds good. The only change I would make would be to get rid of the artist's signature. I don't mind the Fender brand name but after 40 years of playing I'm tired of constantly being inundated to support other people's success. Fender should name the bass the 70's reissue.

The have the 70's reissue, is the Squier VM. They also have the '75 vintage, which is about $1300 retail. So for the kind of money the GL is, it's worth it. If you're not a fan of Geddy Lee tho, it's kinda annoying I guess to buy an instrument that you like but has his sinature on it. I get what you mean on that. I got the Urge I and like it because of the purple color, matching headstock, 3 pups, and they're active. I didn't have any sense of attachement when I got rid off it due to the fact I can't play like Stu but his sig was on it...yeah I get what you mean. :)

What's annoying about Geddy's signature? It's just a little squiggle on the back of the headstock. And even if you can read it (it's not easy) what's the problem with that if the bass plays and sounds great?

If you're not a fan, you just wanted a Fender with a vintage look, it would be annoying to some people. Some would like to buy a bass with out supporting someone else, like Badfender said. I don't care either way. I've had a sig model b4.

I suppose if the signature was on the front of the bass and easily seen, I could better appreciate the gripe. But it's a tiny thing on the back of the headstock that you have to look for to see.

I read a lot of reviews on Harmony Central, and it appears as though the GL will hang with most of the jazzes out there. The only complaint I read was about the truss rod. Is it true that you have to remove the pickguard to adjust the truss rod :?: From pics I've seen it looks as though you adjust it from the headstock end. :?
