are the numbers stamped on my J-Bass pickups a way to date them ? My bass ,according to the serial number 646056 is a '75. the numbers on the pickups are 23 31 74 and 17 34 74. thanks.

Those were manufactured and placed in stock at Fender in '74. The other two number groups are quality control and week of production if memory serves me correctly. Since there could have been pickups in the parts bins on the line with production and year codes from late '73 or '74 or '75, it all depends on how they were taken out of the parts bins and installed in a production line bass as to how that particular set coded '74 would come up at any particular time.

Luke is correct. The first two numbers are the personal ID's for the employees who wound them. The next two are the week they were wound. The final two are the year.
