It's a toss up between the two. I tried the American Deluxe J bass, bit too modern for me, so i've narrowed it down to these bad boys...

Does anyone own a the new series J bass or Marcus Miller signature? Any thoughts??

HEY MAN. I OWN THE MM SIGNATURE AND HAVE TRIED THE NEW STANDARD AFTER I MADE MY PURCHASE. BOUGHT THE MM AFTER MY FIRST AMERICAN JAZZ (THE ONE WITH THE S-1 SWITCH) SHIPPED WITH A LOT OF DEFICIENCIES... TRIED THE NEW STANDARD AFTER I GOT MY MM. BOTH ARE GREAT, BUT IN MY MIND THE MM IS A BETTER VALUE. THE PRICE IS RIGHT, THE ACTIVE ELECTRONICS ARE SUPERB AND SHE PLAYS LIKE A DREAM. DON'T GET ME WRONG, THE NEW AMERICANS ARE GREAT, BUT I PREFER THE SOUND, VERSATILITY, VISUALS AND OVERALL QUALITY OF THE MM OVER THE AMERICAN (ALTHOUGH THERE IS A TOBACCO SUNBURST W/ MAPLE NECK THAT IS BEAUTIFUL).
THE WORKMANSHIP OF THE MM IS EXCELLENT (I KNOW THAT THE QC STANDARDS ARE IN THEORY THE SAME, BUT I FEEL THAT THE JAPANESE HAVE A SLIGHTLY SUPERIOR PRODUCT).
I WOULD RECOMMEND TRYING BOTH AND THEN CHOSE. THAT SAID, IF YOU ASKED FOR MY OPINION, THE MM WINS HANDS-DOWN.

Cheers man, sounds good. I'll have to check them out anyway but it's good to get different opinions / bring issues to light. :)

Doesn't the MM weigh a tonne? Can you get much of a tonal variety or it just that "Marcus Miller" sound?

IT IS HEAVY BUT NOT UNCOMFORTABLE... I AM 6'-0" AND I LOVE THE WEIGHT. YOU FEEL IT BUT IT DOESN'T KILL YOU...
I PLAY IT WITH SH77's (ROTOSOUND STEVE HARRIS SIGNATURE STRINGS) AND I THINK I SOUND MORE LIKE DUCK DUNN THAN I DO MM (DON'T HAVE EITHER'S AMAZING SKILLS, BUT MY SOUND IS MOR EMINE THAN MM's). IT IS VERSATILE. OH, THE TRICK IS IF YOU PLAY IN PASSIVE MODE, THE TONE CONTROLS ARE DEAD... THEY ONLY WORK IN ACTIVE MODE.
ROCK ON MAN, AND BUY WHICHEVER MAKES YOU HAPPIER!!!
