Hello all. First time here. I'm in the market looking to get a Fender jazz bass. I wonder what you experts think are the main advantages/disadvantages between 4 vs 5 strings and the US, Mexican and Japanese made.
I also see so many varieties on the net and i really worry about purchasing online, how can you be sure without trying them out and also shipping sounds like a gamble.

Any advice would be apreciated

Thanks already

Bernie

I can tell you some about the 4 string Jazz Bass.

I think it's mainly about the wood. The Fender Special Run MIM in Ash is probably the best deal.

If you're buying 2nd hand, you should look into the materials used the year the bass was made. Some of the older MIM's were made of Poplar. Some MIJ Jazz Basses were made of Basswood. Some weren't. You should really aim for Alder, and Ash imo.

It's probably not a really good idea to buy online, you should try it first. It really depends on which series it is to determine MIA vs. MIJ vs. MIM, generally speaking MIA is top.

 To me, '62 American Vintage reissue Jazz is the most attractive offering of the entire lineup. 8)

What's cool is it looks like it has the original 60s pup placement.

Have it since 2006, love it!

At first I actually was looking forward to get a AVRI P Bass, but in the end the AVRI 62 Jazz Bass won my heart..

Personally if you can or want to spend the money go with a AVRI 62 jazz. I bought mine brand new about two months ago and absolutely love it. Even to case is cool. Oh and it comes with the ashtray cover and pick-up cover unmounted. 8)

MIA...Made In America
MIJ...Made In Japan
MIM...Made In Mexico

I am the greatest advocate of playing as many instruments as you can before you buy but, it has been brought to my attention that a lot of people don't have access to music stores and, at times, it's virtually impossible. I've bought from Sweetwater and the guitar was great. Anyone else have anything good to say about a online store?

You never mentioned where you were at as far as abilities. Do you really want to put ot $1500.00 or would yo be happier with $500.00?

Another question, where are you? Perhaps someone on here who lives nearby could help.

Good luck.

Ive said it before the customer service at Sweetwater is absolutely Top Notch! I have never EVER had an issue with anything I have purchased from them..and with every order you get a few pieces of candy in the box even if its just guitar strings..whats not to love!

It sure seems like you are destined to get another instrument soon.

That's high praise indeed!

My only experience was to check out their left-handed bass offerings, and found it sadly lacking. I never went back. They sound like a good e-tailer, just only for rightys. :(

Does money matter, or do you have the ability to buy whatever you like?

How long have you been playing? What types of music do you like to play?

The listings of all of Fender's Jazz Bass offerings are right here on fender.com

Which models are looking most attractive to you?

One thing is for sure, Fender has a bass to fit just about anyone.
