Seriously thinking of ordering a left-handed Fender Jazz. Sunburst. Rosewood Fretboard.

The Amercian Standard has the features I'm after, and I would leave it stock. Custom Shop p'ups & heavy bridge. Rolled fingerboard edges. It's been smoothed out with no roughness. I would hope this includes the fret edges. Very nice bass, and should be. Oh yeah, a molded SKB case. Expensive $$$$

Standard MIM. Ugly white pickguard  would have to go. Standard p'ups. They might have to go. Roughly half the price of the American made counter-part. No case. Cardboard box :( Affordable $$

Squire Vintage Modified. Are all Squires made in China? "Duncan Designed" p'ups are a plus. It's cheap=$300 at M.F. No Case=Cardboard Box. I've heard Chinese cardboard is poisonous.

Your Thoughts?

I just ordered the Am. Std. Sunburst. I also considered the MIM--I used to own an MIM Strat. But I knew I wanted the features of the Am. Std Jazz Bass. Now if that damn UPS truck will just hurry my way...

I say get what you really want. Otherwise, you'll always be not-quite-happy with it.

Not experienced enough to have any validity but I can honestly say I love my VM..the neck has "something" its a ton of fun! I still can not believe the body is solid maple and the price so reasonable..just my 2 cents..which is about all my 2 weeks of Bass playing is worth haha! Good luck on whatever you decide!

I've heard the VM's are great basses.

I think the American Standard is your best bet, unless you happen to find a MIM Fender Special Run Ash Jazz Bass..that happens to be left handed. Ash is always better than Alder, no matter where it's made.

I checked the specs here on Fender.com
The Sunburst Squire VM Jazz body is Basswood.
For both the American Standard and MIM Standard the body tonewood is not specified.
I guess that I will have to call Fender's customer relations and ask them about it. Hmmm... :?

I got my 2012 in the other day. I've been playing it solid. Great bass. Very versatile in its range of sounds and tone. I'm so glad I got it, but that shouldn't influence you too much :D

They're great for the money... I loved mine until the day I got my Geddy Lee... I sold the Squier less than a week later. Not to discount the VM as a bad bass at all, it just didn't hold a candle to the Geddy Lee, IMO. YMMV, of course...

I must first share my bias: I like the idea of employing craftspeople in this country, so I'm all about the American Standard. I'm sure some of the parts are made overseas or through NAFTA, but there are still men and women in this country working on those instruments. I also think one should always buy the best they can, and if you're a serious bass player, there's no reason not to justify the expense. It might take some sacrifice and patience to build the funds, but in the end, it's totally worth it in my opinion. All that said, if you weren't left-handed, I'd suggest holding out for a sweet used one, but lefties aren't easy to come across. Just don't sell yourself short, and you'll be happy with whichever you choose.

I should also note that having only played bass for less than a decade now, my first Jazz Bass was a Squire (not VM), which always seemed to have issues - strings breaking at the bridge and popping out of the nut, tone knob crapping out, etc.; followed by a MIM about six months later, which was a decent player but still not amazing; and finally a brand new USA the next year, which has served me beyond well in multiple bands, a few tours, and is more comfortable than its predecessors. The only modification I've had done was replacing the nut with bone. I managed to have a Ric 4001 for a couple years until I admitted it was just too uncomfortable and lacked versatility, and I picked up a USA Bullet earlier this year. There's nothing wrong with working your way up the ladder.

Garbonzo is right. I've had a similar testing and buying periods with Strats. I finally bought an Am. Std. in 2008 (had a 96 and didn't like it). After that, I wanted a Tele and bought an Am. Std., so knowing the quality, I've bought myself the Am Std Jazz Bass. The quality is a lot higher. And you don't have veneer like you do with Mexican sunbursts, if you go for that. In any case, the body can be from multiple pieces.

I don't want to knock MIMs because some experienced guitarists prefer them. But as a consumer, I wanted the American made instruments.

Thanks for everyones responses. They are well received & appreciated.

Yes, I want the American Standard Lefty Jazz. I couldn't get the deal I wanted with a certain e-tailer, and my credit card says "NO!". I'm just not going to buy a lesser bass. $1,400.00 is a lot of money. It's an indulgence that I am struggling with.

Talk to your local Fender dealer. They have quotas to maintain their dealer status with Fender, so if you use that knowledge to your advantage, it can help with negotiations. Skip Guitar Center, because ever since Bain bought them, and considering their volume and status, they no longer negotiate.

It's worth waiting if you hav to save your pennies a while longer. Trust me, you'll always want the Am. Std., and it's better to wait than to buy something "lesser." I went the MIM to MIJ to Am. Std. way, and if I'd just gotten what I wanted, I would have saved money in the end.

Got word back from Fender consumer relations. They sent me a specs sheet that shows alder as the body wood. Mine is a light bass compared to my Ric.
