Hello I´M Carlos de Buenos Aires, I have a Fender Jazz Bass Fretless approx 2001 made in mexico, I post this looking suggestions about this problem, I suggest to review well an instrument before buying.
The fact is that the pitch of my bass is taking off and leaving, yes, the luthier which take you told me the pitch that no solution is wrong and milling for the soul (In English said trust I think), did very near the limit of the fretboard or fingerboard and told me that this problem is factory. Send mail to Fender and subtly redirected Fender Dealer to Argentina, yet I still talk to them, I share the photos look a bit, THINK and especially do not eat like a letdown when buying an instrument and all not to trust the brand without.

I pass the images to draw their own conclusions.

I hope you understand my very bad english.

Greetings and thanks

This is a second hand bass ? Nut is worn , and a new one is needed you know that ?

Did your luthier mean that the scale of the bass is wrong ?

Did you speak french Carlos ? if yes go to the international section ; french. I speak french .
Your english is good

I believe the original poster's main concern is the crack in the middle of the fretboard. No explanation for that other than possibly extreme temperatures or just bad luck. Never actually saw that before and it is not typical at all. This would possibly be a warranty issue if you bought it new in the USA. Don't know about the warranty in your country.

I would not call it a factory fault unless it came that way from the factory. If not under warranty, one solution since it is a fretless might be to fill the crack with expoxy and hope for the best.

It kind of looks like a whole different fretboard someone may have put on it. It looks too thick hence someone trying to drop the action down so they filed out the nut. But they went stupid on it. It's a 2000 Mex? So which 2000 mex had a fretless board that has an overlap at the headstock and is too thick? I dunno.

I agree but you never know. Could be orig owner. i think that Stoker may be onto something. It might not be a factory fretboard in the first place. I also agree that the nut is filed out for some reason.

With a used instrument you pays your money and you takes your chances.

Yes , but guitar and bass it is so easy to check before buying I save a lot of money with used stuff.
I will never buy new guitar or amp anymore.
But I agree you need to learn what to check or you must show it to a luthier to be sure BEFORE buying.

Whoa. I just walked in the other room to look at my own MIM Jazz Bass and confirm; it looks like the hole for the truss rod was drilled WAY too high into the fretboard. If this is the case, that would most definitely be a factory defect.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how much recourse you're going to have with a 11 year-old bass, especially since it's obvious the truss rod has been tampered with quite a bit.

At first glance it does look like the hole for the truss is too high. I still think someone put a fretboard on it. If they did it would explain them gouging out the fret board too much over the stock truss hole to make it fit. I think the fretboard was routed out there over the truss hole. I think the original Fender truss hole is good. This leads back to the one picture that shows an "overlap" of the non stock (IMO) fretboard onto the headstock. Either way it looks like a sloppy job no matter who did it.
