It is the only finish the VM comes in...which is fine with me! I belive Squire was trying to invoke the look of Jaco's bass which had the chrome P Bass knobs,no pick guard.and the Sunburst finish.

Here is the Squier Jazz I re did.

Neck was sanded down to bare wood then I applied 10 coats of lacquer

I just roughed up the finish on the body, applied two coats of black lacquer color, then 8 coats of clear. This poor bass didn't work and had a bowed neck, I straightened the Suier neck before pulling it off. I replaced the trashed pots with 250k vintage style from Allparts, then reworked the electronics. It sounds AMAZING

Thanks... considering my budget and I can't afford to get a really good instrument, it seemed like a good project, and since the bass was already a mess when I got it, I figured the only direction was up.

I own the Squire VM and love it for that very reason you stated. I have had a few fretless basses and the VM is by far the best that I have owned. I modded mine by adding a preamp and a Gotoh bridge. It sang before but now I have more control over the shaping and the added mass of the Gotoh enhances the VM inherent tonal qualities. You won't be sorry if you get it!

I have the VM as well. Does the Gotoh bridge use the same holes as the stock bridge?

To the OP: Depending on the vibrato technique you use you can use round wounds on non-coated or non-ebanol fingerboards, though you'll have less maintenance if you use flats. I'm currently using GHS Pressurewounds on my VM and they're alright, a decent compromise between flats and rounds, but I don't like them tonally as much as the DR Sunbeams I have on my fretted Hwy One Jazz.
