I just bought a "special edition" ash body MIM Jazz bass at Guitar Center. It sounds and plays great, but I noticed feeling a slight ridge on one side of the skunk stripe running from approx. the 7th fret to the 9th. The same day I bought it, it was set up pretty well, but action was a tad high, and the neck had a fair amount of relief. I tweaked the truss rod maybe a quarter turn at the most (with the strings de-tensioned). It was'nt hard to turn or anything, and it made the neck feel lots better. I don't know if the stripe issue was there before I made the adjustment. Looking at the area with a magnifying glass, you can see the stripe very slightly raised (again, only on one side) and there appears to be a fine separation in the varnish between the stripe and the neck. Is this anything to be concerned about? I have owned several MIMs and others with skunk stripe necks, and have never seen this. Any help would be appreciated, I really like this bass. It's seemingly staying in tune really well btw.

I wouldnt be concerned over that, i too own a Mexican made Jazz bass and the skunk stripe isnt fully flush with the body at the end, sits a little below. Im guessing that its just set like that or something. Im no expert but, thats just my opinion.

Every neck is unique and can develop its own problems. I would keep an eye on that skunk stripe and make sure that it doesn't move any more. I have seen basses where the skunk stripe pops out of the neck. To fix it, you must back off the truss rod and re-glue the stripe back in place if it is salvageable.

Good luck with your bass.

sand it down flush with the rest of the neck or if you think it's unglued take it back.
