So I decided to take the plunge full swing, and sold one of my PRS guitars to buy a proper bass rig. The Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass is nice, but it ands the Ampeg BA-115 I bought to get me started just aren't enough for my needs... so, I got a sweet deal on this at GC:

I also got this, to make up for the guitar loss...

For an amp, I got an SWR 350x and a pair of Hartke Transporter cabs... no pics yet of those, but I will get some up soon!

Loving the new rig!

LOL... I'll be doing just that, very shortly! :D

A question on the bass though... I had been considering some Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups for the Squier... Would those pickups be better in the Geddy Lee than the stock pickups? Basically, would I be better off putting the Ultra Jazz pickups in the Fender and moving the stock Fender pups to the Squier as a backup, or just leave the Geddy alone and upgrading the Squier with the Dimarzios?

Black & White Geddy Lee Jazz = Very Nice! Congratulations! 8)

Do yourself a big favor and seriously consider Lindy Fralin pick-ups.

I'm sure the Fralins are nice, but at $280 for a pair of hum cancelling pickups, they're a bit out of my price range at the moment. I can get a pair of hum cancelling Dimarzios for $100... and I've heard good things about the Ultra Jazz set as far as tone is concerned... What I don't know is really anything about the stock pickups in the Geddy Lee bass, and how they compare to the Dimarzios when it comes to tone and output. I'm sure they're better than the stock "Duncan Designed" pickups in the Squier, but I want to have the best pickups in the Geddy, since that will be my main stage bass. Just wondering if anyone here had swapped out the Geddy Lee pickups for Dimarzios, and could share a tone report.

The Fender sounds great thorugh the SWR as it is, so I'm in no hurry to swap anything out... I've added the thumbrest, but aside from that, it will probably stay stock for quite some time. I was really digging the Squier, but now after A/Bing the two of them through the new amp... the Squier is going to pretty much be a benchwarmer until I can upgrade the pickups in it, for sure. Between the two, the difference is night and day.

The Ultras I had -I was not all freaked out on. I prefer the Dimarzio regular Jazz pickups 123's I think they are--I also have had two Jedi Lee basses. I didn't like the pick ups that came with them. One of them I put a stock bridge on and I think it sounded better. I think Geddy uses rotosounds. I like the rotos and Dimarzio combo but hey that's just me and what do you care what I like? I like fish though. And spaghetti but not at the same time.

LOL... I'm not a seafood fan, but I do love some spaghetti! :)

What didn't you like about the ultras? I'm looking for hum cancelling, so it would have to be those or the Area Js I think they're called... Specs look like the Ultras put out more lows and highs out of the two. Are there other hum cancelling pups out there for roughly the same price? I jusy can't swing the Fralins right now...

I don't know what strings are on it now, but they have multi-colored ball ends, so I'd guess D'Addario... I do like the sound of it as it is though. I'm playing in a straight up rock band, all original. For tone comparison, think Nickelback, Velvet Revolver, Seether, Daughtry, that sort of modern, mainstream hard rock sound. I'm new to the bass thing, so I'm full of questions, and no even sure yet what my end goal is for a tone that's "mine"... If it was guitar, I'd know exactly what I need! But on bass gear, I'm still pretty clueless.

Thanks for the responses so far! :D

The ultras were not loud enough I thought. IMO the hum thing doesn't bother me. I honestly really never have that much problem with it at all. Maybe some bar has chump wiring so I just put both pickups ( for my Jazzes) on full for the evening, Alot of other clubs are no problem at all. I play thru my GK RB800 and an Ampeg HLF 4 10 plus I run thru the PA which has 2 18 low end cabs on each side- so no matter where I put the pickup knobs on my bass I still have wall to wall and tree top tall bass sound. Hum is not an issue because I can correct it and still rattle bones.

I have a good honking, ringing sound from my basic amp but when all is said and done the soundman has the most to do with making my sound for the audience. The round wound rotosounds and good pickups and set up is at the heart but then the signal goes to the PA.

I am not one to use / keep old bass strings on my bass. I change strings allot. If it is real hot and swetty I'll sometimes change them after 3 or 4 gigs---- that would be 9 to 12 hours. I keep it fresh and that lets my set ups and performance parts do their job right every time. That kind of helps me keep my sound. That and the way I strike, pluck, hit etc the strings-- along with other right and left hand techniques. That's how you get a signature sound on bass. A great amp sound helps too. Right now along with my GK and Ampeg I have an SWR Red Head and an Epifani 1 15 cab AND a Bag End 1 15 that just kills. All that junk (amps and good bass guitar) is like ridin' a bull !!!! DISCLAIMER### I never dun road no bull yet but I've heard alot of bull before.

That's cool... I'll probably just leave it stock for now until I decide exactly what it is I like and don't like about it after a few gigs. I may decide it doesn't need anything... and I also may decide I don't need the Squier anymore as a backup, and sell it to get some money back... so no need in dropping new pups in that one just yet either. It's surprising how fast the Geddy Lee moved me from loving the Squier to barely liking it... Kinda makes me sad, because I still really love the way the Squier looks. Maybe I'll keep it until we do our first video at least, LOL!

Wait till you get your hands on a real 72 Jazz. You'll drop the Geddy like a bad habit.

I'd imagine a real 72 would be far more expensive, would it not? I'll need to start making money with this band before I start shopping for vintage gear, lol!
