I was just wondering for those of you with active bass preamps, how often do you change your settings, for example your treble and bass settings, during a show?

Never. I keep my tone controls flat, pan on bridge pick up then just move my hands closer and further away from the neck, slap, pop, tap, strum etc. to get different tones. Plus I have a hand full of pedals.

so you keep it flat with the active preamp? does it sound different than if it was just passive?

Yeah. I'm playing a Steve Bailey Jazz with an 18 volt preamp so the electronics to raise the headroom so I don't have to play as hard. The electronics do color the sound but in a really good way. It does have that classic Jazz Bass bridge pick up "honk" with a modern edge to it. Given my playing style which I consider traditional as in the avoidance of doubling guitar riffs or pumping eighth note roots with a few updates it is the perfect bass for me and my style.

I hope that answers your questions.
