Hey all...I just bought this Fender and had a couple people in another forum question it because of the shape its in.

1.Stored in case alot
2.I am only the SECOND player and third owner of this guitar. The guy i bought it off, had bought it off orig owner.
3.Also has some foam still left on ashtray...is this correct?

Here is orig ebay listing (which has good pics) and some pics i took today...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-Fender-Jazz-Bass-EX-FINE-Shape-/150853274496?pt=Guitar&hash=item231f8e4b80#ht_14020wt_1398

Any help would be appreciated!

That's as original as they come......fresh from the Fullerton "farm"!

The foam on the underside of the bridge cover was a rudimentary mute installed at the factory.

I'm not gonna ask what you paid but I'll tell you this -- it's worth an arm, both legs, and perhaps an eyeball as well.

¡Que bonita!

Hey thanks....yea paid a little under ebay listing price.
I also took it to a reputable vintage dealer in Toronto today and he gave it a clean bill of health. (all orig except strings and nut)
I will also get a written appraisal from them in the mail soon

Wow, that bass is in amazing shape! Really makes my '72 look like a beater bass!

The last test would be the smell test.... It looks like it didn't get played much. I'm not kidding about the smell thing. I remember the smell my 74 had when I'd open the case. My 72 has a smell when you open the case . The 74 had the new smell and my 72 has it's own old smell. I know what the new Fender basses smell like too-- so whatever....the new ones do not smell like the old 70's did.....Okay -- think of it like fine wine and you sniff the bouquet of the wine before you take a drink... give me a break.....

Im pretty good at setting up basses, but havent owned a vintage Jazz before.

I have a question about p/u height and adjustment. My bridge p/u is up fairly close to the strings...is this normal? Also with the p/u pots on full im getting an aggressive sound

I have a new set of Roto's that i am going to put on this baby, and to me it looks like the p/u may be shimmed up or something. The screws holding p/u in are also pretty tight, so im going to search for a screwdriver thats fits really well before i attempt looking underneath it

Any pointers or links would be much appreciated!

Well the smell test worked!
Ok so i have gone and re-strung her with a set of RotoSound 66's 45-105 roundwonds and its a singin'

So i took both p/u's out and pickguard off...and realized that nothing had been removed ONCE from this bass. Used a magnifying glass on all the pick guard screws and same thing. The fit was so tight on the p/u (neck) case and the pick guard i thought i was going to break it.....was a pain getting it back in

Glad that is over with...still tinkering with the string height but at-least i freed up the adj on the bridge p/u (seems it was in that same position for a very long time. I may do a Zep cover on YT with this thing!...here are some pics (sorry...should have worn pants and not shorts)

well if I was looking at the bass and just staring at it-- I would wonder why there is clear on the fret board. The binding is wider than my 72. The bridge looks too new. The pickups and foam in the cavity looks good. I'd wonder where I could do a black light test but I 'm not exact on if they used nitro in 71 on everything. My 72 is nitro finish. (this is still me thinking out loud). I guess it's original. It is a nice clean example for sure. Not many like that around. I guess if it smells like a 72 it must be.

I had just hit the fretboard with conditioner and wiped it off about 15min before pics were taken.

Rarely have I wanted to play a bass based solely on photos, but damn! that bass is screamin to be played.

+1!

It *begs* to be plugged into an Acoustic 360/370 or a Sunn Coliseum.

Wow I've got that same exact bass but it's in slightly worse condition. My dad bought it in the 70s when it was new and now Ive got it!

Nice that it is still in the family!

Im pondering buying a 71 Pbass in mint condition...would sit nicely beside my 71' jazz!
-same pick guard
-same burst
-same condition
-Rosewood with dots
