I'm thinking of trading in my 2011 Fender American Jazz bass for a Fender American Precision bass.. I only had the bass for almost a year. Do you think the musical store will let me trade it directly? My bass is fairly new and fresh I will give it a 98% on how great it looks. My reason is because.. after a year of owning a Fender American Jazz bass.. I noticed the metal cover under the knobs looks weird.. At first I didn't like the look of a Fender Precision bass.. now that i'm used to Fenders.. the Precision looks better. I noticed how the Precision bass looks more calm and more standard. Anyways.. did anyone ever trade in their Fender bass for another type of Fender? I'm thinking of trading my bass for a Fender P bass that's displayed on the walls. Do you think that's a fair trade? for a fairly new Fender for the Fender bass displayed in the store?

1. Should I wait maybe.. 2-4 years later and trade it in? or do it now?

2. main reasons of trading my Fender Jazz for a P bass is.. the p bass looks alot better to me now. and the fender jazz bass is way too shiny with its metal cover under the knobs.

lastly.. if you guys could give me some advice or anything that will help.

You can probably trade your used Fender bass for another used Fender bass and get out for just about an even swap. But realize that music stores are in business to make money and will probably want some cash in the trade. They are not UNICEF.

While your bass is in like new condition the fact remains that it is not new, but is now a used instrument. New instruments cost far more than a used one. This is partly because of the warranty involved and the fact that some people want a new one more than a used one.

So you can trade your used bass for another used bass and get out for way less than trading it for a new one. You will only get about 50% of what you paid for it in a trade at some dealers toward a new instrument, other dealers will allow more. The dealer where you initially purchased the new Jazz will probably allow the most.

First negotiate the price of the bass you want to buy. Then only after the price is settled should you offer your existing instrument in trade. That is the only way to know for sure exactly how much they are allowing in trade for your current instrument.

You might in fact make out better selling it yourself in a private sale.

All that being said, LOOKS are not a valid reason to trade an instrument. I wish I had the two Fenders back that I traded away in the early 1970's to get one that "looked better." It never dawned on me that I could actually own more than one as back then nobody I know of had more than one bass except Donald Dunn who had two. Even James Jamerson and Carol Kaye only had one basse at a time so far as I know. Now everyday players will have dozens or more. In the case of Teddy Gentry of Alabama, hundreds.

I'm not saying how many I have here, but I'm never selling one that plays and sounds decent again. I've always regretted it. I pretty much have no interest in buying another right now either. I'm set for now.

If you try to trade it at a music store you will be lucky to get 50% of what you originally paid. Your best bet is to try to sell it locally. I have had good luck selling on Craigslist.

Here where I'm breathin' they try to reem you out on any trade. I have never had a good offer on ANY guitar or bass I've taken to any music store ever. I quit that noise way long ago like at least 10 years. Craigslist or one of those deals has always been better for me. I guess I live in guitar nazi land. I think I do.

You absolutely don't stand a chance on a straight up trade, even for a used bass. Selling it outright or offering it for trade on craigslist are your two best options.

Guitar Center's general policy on buying in used gear is to give you roughly 60% of what they will sell it for. They determine that by searching for completed listings on ebay of similar used examples of what you're trading in. So you could search for a 2011 Jazz Bass and see what they've sold for recently, (actually sold for, not what they were asking for...) And then figure 60% of that is what you'll get in trade. Sometimes they'll take some off the price of what you're trading for... But you still lose your a**, almost every time.

STOP! Don't Do It!

musicisfender, keep your Jazz AND buy a Precision if at all possible. You are going to want both.

Otherwise you'll be kicking yourself for the rest of your life.
