Thanks, James. I didn't know that MM had any 3-pickup models. That Reflex bass looks like an absolute beast! It probably weighs a ton just from all the magnets alone but I like heavy instruments. My first real bass was an Aria Jazz copy. It had some cheap-o aspects to it, especially the tuners, but the fretboard was an absolute dream. I liked it well enough that I totally refinished the body and refitted it with new tuners, a Schecter pickup, new pickguard and new bridge. I would still have except some SOB stole it. One local luthier who worked on it dubbed it "the slinky bass" because it was such a delight to play especially for walking lines in jazz. I miss it lots and have been looking for a reasonable facsimile ever since.

You're welcome, ..glad I could help.......I've seen the Reflex bass & Al Bass in the Ernie Ball/Music-Man section of my music store..... I picked it up The Reflex Bass & it didn't feel overly heavy ....The Reflex looks like a Bass version of Queen's Brian May's guitar ....(looks like that to me anyway..... :) ..)

I've always screwed around with bass as a second instrument. In the past few years I got serious about becoming a "real" bassist. I'll be honest, I've always loved the "look" of a Jazz bass. Because of this, I lusted over one long before I really got serious about bass.

When I did get "serious", a funny thing happened. I fell in love with the simplicity and tone of a P. I still wanted a Jazz bass, but for some reason I ended up playing a lot of Jazz basses before I found "the one".

I tend to reach for my Precision a lot, but there are are times that I'm playing something that just works better for me on the Jazz bass. And, sometimes I use a Stingray. It's all about having choices.

Getting back to the original question, I think that the simple tone of a P fits well in the mix for most rock. It is really that simple to my ears.

My first decent bass was an MIJ JV P Bass bought new in the '80s while living in Tokyo (wish I still had it!) Later I moved on to an MIJ Jazz, which became my main bass for several years of playing regularly in bands during and after college. Also had a Telecaster Bass with the humbucker and an aftermarket split-coil P pup. Then I quit playing for 6-7 years.

When I got back into it I had more money so I started getting a variety of basses, either because I had always wanted one (Rickenbacker, Tune 8-string) or just because they were interesting or appealed to me (Alembic, Guild, Gibson).

Well, now I'm back to the P!!! Bought the '70s P a couple of years ago, which I have strung with rounds. Then found a Donald "Duck" Dunn and realized that I could string that with flats. Those two have become my main basses! I think drummer5359 said it well - fatness and simplicity that sits well in the mix!

About 3 pick up basses. Back in the early to mid 90's Fender had their HM (Heavy Metal) series basses that featured 3 jazz bass pick ups and a 5 position switch. When I was younger I thought it would be cool to get one and put a Kahler Bass Trem on it and make it like a Bass Strat.
