Just a side note for the Paul McCartney fans who have posted here on this thread....He's playing here in Vancouver tonight ....Sold Out Show at BC Place Stadium.... 60,000. or more people expected to see the concert tonight....it's also rumoured that Bruce Springteen will join him on stage at some point in the show to belt out a few tunes (Bruce plays here tomorrow night at the Rogers Area)........I'll post a review of the show for those who are interested...... :) ...........The last time McCartney played Vancouver was September 1964 with the Beatles,....so there's lot's of hype regarding this show.......strange he never played here with Wings....

I've tried multiple times to get into the P-bass scene, and I just don't like playing them. Many friends play them exclusively, and they make them sound great. I just can't get into it. I don't get the tones I want, the necks feel weird, etc. Since I got my Bullet a few months ago the Jazz has been hibernating in its case, but I still consider it my number one.

The P bass is a big boned lass. I've always like my ladies a little more svelte. The great tone of a Pbass is undeniably great. I did borrow one for a gig once, one from the sixties unknown year, from the bass player of Piper. Who? No, Piper,
Anyway, the low A note on that thing jumped out when hit. It was a beast to play because of that. It had a few notes that were lighter. I had a Spector with a single DiMarzio from his Brooklyn shop. Not many of them made. Neck through bass. The best tone ever, and consistently even. Problem for me was he fashioned it after a P-bass. Big boned and his was also neck heavy. It was a gift so kept it for years. Here it is.

Big-boned vs. svelte - good analogy. I have preferred the "svelte"-ness of J-basses most of my life but about 12 years ago i bought a '51 P reissue, mostly because I loved the aesthetics so much, but talk about big-boned, the '51 is a PLANK or maybe a building timber. I quickly discovered that the E and G strings were grossly underpowered, possibly because the A and D had raised pickup poles, so I switched the pickup out for an SD Quarter Pounder which really brought things to life. It took me a while to get comfortable playing it, but I'm to the point now where I can bring either a J or the '51 P to a gig and be fine.

I started out playing a P Bass and have always had a soft spot for them, but my true love has always been the Jazz. From seeing Sting to Geddy Lee play them they just intrigued me and in my hands feel perfect! That said, I will never say no to a P-Bass!
ABS :D

The first bass I ever played was a P-bass. I got used to it and it quickly became the sound by which I judged all others. I had a Gibson SG bass for a short while and hated it partly because of the lack of weight balance but also because it didn't sound like a P-bass. I also tried some Japanese P/J basses and was equally disappointed. The P-bass was King in my book. When I tried a J-Bass for the first time (maybe 15 years later) all of that went out the window in about 2 seconds. The sound and feel and versatility were instantly apparent. There was a new King on the throne.

I am now solidly and permanently planted in the J-bass camp and everything else has to try to measure up and usually fails miserably.

Interestingly, the Strat came after the Tele and it was more comfortable and more versatile and it caught on. The Jazz came after the Precision and it was more comfortable and more versatile but somehow it never caught on in the same way the Strat did. Both designs were considered to be improvements on their predecessors.

My 2¢.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I think most rock bands use the Precision because the bass players got confused by the extra knob.

Someone mentioned Strats. I'd like to see Fender produce a Jazz Bass with 3 pickups and a 5-way switch like a Strat. Crazy?

The higher the number of pickups doesn't necessarily mean you are going to have a better tone on a bass. I would rather prefer 1 superb pickup to 3 average ones.

I wouldn't know, I've never tried it. There aren't many of them out there, I don't know if that means that someone has tried it and maybe it wasn't very successful, but I think you'd get a wider option of tones. Why are there several 6-string models on the market w/3 pickups but not very many basses? If anything, there's more room between the neck and bridge on a bass for 3 pickups than there is on any 6 string. Plus w/a 5-way switch you could play around with that "out-of-phase" sound like on a Strat. Of course, if I were to go to the trouble of having 3 pickups on a bass they'd all be good ones. If I had one it would probably be more of a "jammin'" bass for situations where I was experimenting around with new players and might want the option of more tones, however when I'm playing regular shows with a band that I've rehearsed with a lot I go for simplicity and consistency - less things to go wrong or get obsessive about onstage. I like to pretty much just plug in and play, and only have to tweak my sound a little depending on specific room acoustics.

Hey if it's a 3 pickup bass you're looking for then check this one out:
http://www.music-man.com/instruments/ba ... -bass.html
or how about this one:
http://www.music-man.com/instruments/basses/big-al.html
& here's a classic with some pickup switching options:
http://www.music-man.com/instruments/ba ... ngray.html
as cool as these basses in the links I've provided are,....... I'm happy with the good ol' Jazz bass,..... My Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass, Marcus Miller Jazz Bass & 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 have all the pickup & tonal options I need.....but that's just me... :)

Over the years, I've owned a lot of different makes and kinds of bass guitars. Fender has always been my bass of choice. To me, when i pick up a bassand it "fits" and "feels" right, it comes home with me. At present, I have a FSR Precision, a MIM Jazz and a Squier Vm Modified Jazz. All three fit the criteria. My Precision is my #1, it tops the list as far as, all the things that make playing perfect.

The fact that it only has two knobs doesn't hurt either.

I leaned how to play on a "ElDegas"Precision copy, I then moved on to Ibanez , Guild & Jackson basses eventually making my way to the Jazz bass,..it feels & plays perfect as does my Precision......though I'm more of a Jazz bass fan..... & I get the best of both worlds with the P/J Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass..
