Good one.........I saw an interview with Geddy Lee where he said his Rickenbacker 4001 was a bit of a pain in the rear live with regard to that whole Rick O sound stereo thing..
He also described switching to the Fender Jazz as a breath of fresh air in 1981. Then there was a 6yr period between 1983 - 1989 where Geddy also played Stienberger & Wal basses only to return to the Jazz bass as his main recording & live Bass.......but away I digress.. :)

For Rock a P bass is simple for a sound man. He doesn't have to worry about the bass player always messing with the two volumes on a Jazz and constantly changing his sound. Most bass players leave their amp alone during a gig (I did) so if you are playing a Jazz you know that on certain tunes you need a little more bridge or more neck or more bridge with a little neck or a lot of neck and just a bit of bridge or all the way up on both pickups or full on the neck and back off the bridge (my favorite) or then turn the treble down and then up and then down--- so when a guy is on a J bass he needs to take ritalin according to a soundman!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I think the answere to the original question could be divided into a couple categories:

Some are picking up the Precision simply because of every body else doing the same. They really have no idea why.

Others like the springing "boing" sound a good Precision has. A good, nasty honk tone.

I think you are right on that. I like the way you describe the sound of a Precision.

On the other "no idea why"- I think that runs over into a lot of aspects of bass. The Badass bridge thing- the umpteen different accessories and strings etc etc.. the volume pot issue -- all that stuff. That's not to say that one shouldn't experiment with tone. That's part of the fun of it .

I liek both--but I would prefer a J Bass because of the neck and the overall feel--but if I was the bass player in a band that recorded music I would like to have both and use the one that was best for the song--and the J Bass more often live.

I just ordered an Am. Std. Jazz bass. Played a 2011 in a store not long ago, and it blew me away. Here's hoping the 2012 will sound as good.

As for Jazz Basses in Rock, The Beatles used one all over the Abbey Road album, sometimes with George playing it and other times Paul. I see a lot of J Basses in blues bands.

I had a hard time deciding which one to buy, but the neck is what sold me--my paws handle the J-Bass much better.

Paul doesn't look too comfortable with that Jazz.

I'm a lefty too, and a big Paul fan. I have a 78 Rickenbacker 4001s lefty. The Jazz bass I've ordered will be my first lefty Fender bass.

Thanks for posting those photos of Paul playing the Jazz Bass. I haven't seen those in a while.

Yeah, I know George and John grabbed the VI a lot.

All I know is, the 2008 or 09 Am. Std. Jazz Bass I played was as perfect for rock as it was for jazz and blues. I spent an hour with it trying out different sounds, and it was a very versatile bass.

I think probably because the P bass has a sound more like what most modern bands want. Although I have seen many bands using a jazz bass.

Both have significant number of good players, but I have to admit the P Bass has more. On the other hand, this is a matter of popularity not superiority.
