I was using D'Addario XL's for a long time, but switched to DR Lowriders a few months ago...my favorite.
Jazz bass + Markbass rig + DR Lowriders = tonal bliss

I really like it. It's attractive, has great pickups, comfortable quartersawn/asymmetric neck. Initially I was a little unhappy with how sticky the neck felt, but it seems to have completely cured and is very smooth now. It's very expensive, but in having played a Custom Shop- the quality seems to be on par. However, I think it might be a little pricey for many Fender fans, and the only reason I was able to pick it up was because I was able to get 12 months 0% financing through GC. I still owe about $1300 on it and have until March to get it paid off.

that's cool. I keep forgetting that the bigger stores have the 0% financing for the expensive stuff. Good for you, good buy then. I like how the colors look on the Selects for sure.

In all honesty, it's not a great buy...a bit frivolous...my standards sound about as good. Once in a band mix, the differences aren't very discernable. But thank you.

I may be in the minority but I have EBMM Slinkys on my 5 string MIM Jazz. Nice mid-bright string with a surprisingly solid B. Mines a passive though so take that into consideration. YMMV

Those are great flats for bassists who don't want too much thud/mud.

Been playing off and on for 40 years or so and have tried round and flat wound. Has anyone tried the D'Addario half-rounds?

Art,
I tried them when they first came out in the mid-'80's. I had great expectations, but was disappointed. I played 'em for a month and changed them out for some Dean Markley Blue Steels ( also pretty new at the time). The fact that D'Addario still makes the half-rounds means somebody likes 'em. Maybe they're better now. I just didn't like the sound or the feel. Sorry I couldn't have been of more help, but that's my experience.

Linn

A set of dead round wounds will sound better IMO.

OP - I use the Marcus Miller Fat Beams on my MIM Jazz 4 string. What I like about them is the slightly higher tension and they sound fatter yet still articulate and less floppy than other .45 to .105 sets.

Art - I had a set of Half Rounds on a Yamaha TRB5 I used to own. I liked them on that bass but not so much on my Fender Jazz V. They felt a little rough on my plucking hand at first but smoothed out soon after.
