Hi all,

I have a MIM Jazz bass that I am looking for replacement screws, foam, and PU covers for. Is there a significant difference in MIM and USA models? It seems that MIM use Chrome, while USA use Nickel? Foam the same? Covers the same? or are there different dimensions? Would appreciate any help. This is a bass that belonged to a friend of mine, who decided to leave us 2 years ago, and his widow has entrusted me to get all of his instruments ready for sale. TIA!

On the early MIM Jazz Basses, both pickups were identical dimensionally which meant that the US-made CS '62 JB bridge pickup was too wide to fit the existing body rout. That pickup cover was also larger than its Mexican-made counterpart. Measure your pickups before ordering replacement covers. The foam is likely a universal fit -- it can be altered if necessary by trimming with a sharp pair of scissors. Re-issue instruments generally use nickel screws while "modern" editions are furnished with chrome.

Thanks for the info, Retro! I thought there might be a difference, but not exactly sure what to look for!

My question is why do you want to put parts from a MIA basson a bass which was made in Mexico? Seems a little deceptive to me.

NO! I don't want to do that AT ALL, Rock! I'm just looking for the proper replacement parts for the MIM J-Bass. It's very confusing, as a lot of suppliers don't specify whether they are for MIM or MIA instruments. I would NEVER try to dupe anyone on the origin of an instrument, and it would be pretty impossible, anyway, since a glance at the SN will give you that info immediately...

Quite frankly, I'm a bit insulted that you assumed that's what I was trying to do, when in reality, I just want to find the right parts that belong on the instrument in question...

Peace,

John

you can put usa screws in a MIM bass all day long and I doubt anyone will think your bass is now a usa, ===same goes for anything you do to it. It's still going to have the decal on it. :)

Thanks, Stoker! That WAS my point! I just want to put the correct replacement parts on it...
