I resently Aquired a Fender jazz bass from 1977, maple neck, think it's and ash body.
I was just wondering about the instrument and about that year, and is there anything interesting about it, fender history is usually pretty hektic so wondering if anyone could fill me in, or send me some links on fender jazz bass history.
Pease!

I took this off the Fender web page.

The charts below detail the most common Fender serial number schemes from 1976 to the present. Once again, there is quite a bit of overlap in numbers and years. The only way to try to narrow the date range of your specific instrument is to remove the neck and check the butt end of the neck heel for a production date, which may be stamped or written there (if you’re uncomfortable doing this yourself, please refer to an experienced professional guitar tech in your area). Serial numbers with an “S” prefix denote the 1970s (signifying a CBS attempt to use serial numbers to identify production years); an “E” prefix was introduced in 1979 to denote the 1980s. As seen in the overlap of numbers and years, even these references to actual production dates are rather loose.

SERIAL NUMBERS

PRODUCTION DATES

76 + 5 digits
S6 + 5 digits

1976

S7 + 5 digits
S8 + 5 digits

1977

S7 + 5 digits
S8 + 5 digits
S9 + 5 digits

1978

S9 + 5 digits
E0 + 5 digits

1979

S9 + 5 digits

Your pics didn't come through.

You should be able to see this:
http://i.dbastatic.dk/images/3/58//8276 ... 6355_3.jpg
just a link to a picture.
Yeah I've been on that page at couple of times, but I know that the instrument is from 1977, and have the original recept from the buyer in 1978.
I'm thinkingdid they do anything special to those basses from that perticular year, where there many various types of the basses, like how and where they were built. Are there any variations on the basic fender jazz bass from 1977 is kinda my overall question :)
BTW! i'm currently looking to buy "the fender bass an illustrated history"
should give me the answers BUT maby you guys would know to hehe :)
Peace ! :)

Your 1977 Jazz bass looks like the current '75 vintage Jazz bass or what Marcus Miller's 1977 Jazz bass would of looked like before he modified it in the early 1980's with a Sadowsky 2 band EQ & a BadAss II Bridge, Your bass also probably has a 3 bolt neck plate (with mirco tilt)' the body is definately Swamp Ash, your neck is most likely one piece maple (with white pearl block fret markers with white binding)& bullet truss rod.......I'm not sure about the pickups in 1977 but I'm pretty sure they're just single coil standard alnico pickups.......

Thanks guys!! :)
That would sound about right :)
just bought this bass, for 1870 dollar, the bass is in mint condition, and has spent it's sad life on top of a closet, in it's original case, not even a mark on the frets.
How much would one of these go for in the states ? is this a good buy ?

I think you got a good deal too!! :) it's a good looking bass & if it's in the condition you say it's in I thinks it's worth somewhere between $1700. to $2300. though saying this .....I'd have to see it , touch , play it. & see the seriel number........but as long as you like it ,thats all that counts.

You got a very good if it is original and actually a real Fender closet classic. Vintage dealers are asking $2400 to $2600 for '77 Jazzes in similar or worse shape.

If it is original then keep it that way. Don't change anything but the strings....ever. I'm personally not a big fan of block inlays, but others are.

Hang onto that original receipt also. Provenience and documentation is very important to value. Your package would possibly appraise for much more than you paid.

The photos you posted don't work. It would be nice to see some.
