I couldnt find another thread about this, but tell me if i have overlooked it!

I was just wondering, whats the tonal difference between rosewood, ebony and Maple necks? I personally have always liked rosewood but after buying the Marcus Miller Jazz ive gotten used to maple.

What is generally seen as 'better' and how does it affect the guitar tonally?

any responce appreciated!

If you hit the "Search" button and type in "fretboard", alot of "maple and rosewood" posts come up. Just look thru them for any info. Also here is this topic from another forum: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthrea ... adid=67268</p>

Hope this can help.

Just for Zod, I won't use caps... I prefer maple for aesthetics and for a warmer sound. I personally believe that maple has a richer sound than rosewood. That is my impression.
I suggest playing your MM (I also own and love mine) and a rosewood Jazz Bass at any guitar shop. I did and I think that maple sounds more natural.
Clatpon switched from Gibsons to Fenders with maple necks back in the '70's and on the last Cream tour, most of the criticisim regarding his sound stemmed from it being less punchy. I think that the neck woods (along with the Les Paul vs. Strat setups and configurations) made a difference.

Nice info in that link -- thanks.

For me, I like to have one of each (maple and rosewood) for more tone options.

The general opinion would say that maple is punchier and brighter than rosewood which is warmer.

In my experience the difference is very subtle and hardly noticable on fretted basses.

The main difference is probably in the mind of the player. If you are aware of the general opinion, you will most likely experience the difference based on a preconceived notion.

Personally I prefer rosewood over maple solely based on appearance.
