There are plenty of threads on here with people posting pics of their basses and that is all good and well. I've seen pretty basses that sounded like crap. I've also seen dog ugly ones that sounded fantastic. So let's get down to brass tacks and post links to hear how our basses sound.

Here are a couple of rehearsal tracks from my band. The bass is a Fender Steve Bailey Jazz Bass:

Let's hear yours.

you can make any instrument sound good. if you know what you are doing. i used to be a drummer, i can make a CB kit sound just like any mid range to high end kit. with proper tuning and using specific heads. also, you have to remember. everyone has different ears. one bass sound to you may be just awful. while it might sound amazing to the person playing it.

same goes for bass. if you have a decent EQ on your amp. or buy a sans amp. you can pretty much make your bass sound great! if you know what you are doing. its all within the player in my opinion. the equipment does matter, but for the most part its the ears of the player that matters the most

I respectfully disagree. I have been playing bass for 34 years and have had some basses that couldn't get a good sound. Over the years I've played Washburn, Fender, Alembic, Ibanez, G & L and Pedulla. I get a great sound with my two American Fenders and the Alembic. The G & L sounded good but I didn't like the neck. My son has a Squier Jazz and it doesn't sound as good as my MIA. As people become more experienced, their tone preference usually evolves as well. The one thing many players ignore is the amount of impact strings have on their tone. My philosophy is find what you like and stick with it.

idk man, i have to say yes, some basses sound better than other. however, if you have a decent amp and cab. with a decent EQ. there really is no reason why you shouldn't be able to get a good bass sound. I have owned some pretty awful basses in my day. yes, some do sound worse than others. however, i have always found, with a little tweaking of the knobs and EQ. you can get a bad bass to sound pretty good. I respect what you are saying! you have many more years of XP than i do. Though, i have always had a real natural nack for mixing, and EQ. so maybe it just comes easier to me than others?

I honestly didn't mean for this to turn into a debate over what constitutes a great tone or a bad one. I just noticed that on this forum there seems to be quite a few "Post pics of your bass" threads. Not that I have anything against "Visual Aestetics". I'd rather play and hear the bass that I'm seeing a picture of.

@Basscleff. That '72 looks and sounds friggin great.

@nicebassbro. I also have a knack for EQ and mixing too. But you can't polish a turd so to speak. You can't make a $150 short scale Grand Prix P-Bass copy that's made out of particleboard (my first bass) sound like a '62 Jazz.

Rev J : there is nothing wrong with a healthy debate! I do get what you guys are saying though. Idk, maybe i am wrong? Just in my experiences as a musician..a poor musician i might add..I never really had the greatest equipment. So i had to make every purchase count! So i did a lot of my own research to see what could make my sound the best it possibly could be without spending a lot of money. I learned to make due with what i had, and make the best of what i had. for instance..Like i said before, i use to be a drummer for about 17 years, i could never afford a high end or even a good mid range kit. So i pretty much played a tricked out CB kit my whole drumming career. The trick is tuning, and using good drum heads. I use to get so many compliments on how my kit used to sound. i took all the CB labels off, and when i told people it was a CB. they would be like wow, you are a liar. lol. then when it comes to bass stuff. I always had just average stuff. though, i would figure out ways to make what i had sound good, whether i got some sort of sans amp, or bass EQ pedal, or even a powered mixer. I always got compliments on how great my bass rigs have sounded too.

I also will agree, i don't think a short scale knock off is going to sound like a nice american j bass. what i am trying to say is. you can make pretty much any bass sound good enough (decent) to play with some proper EQing. In the end. we all have different experiences in life. I do know what you mean though, there are a lot of bassist out there who's rigs sound like crap..and im sorry to say, but im not going to back down on this one..I really think it has MOSTLY everything to do with the player.

I have always used "high end" amps and cabs. generally Ampeg SVT or GK. However, there have been some basses which I just couldn't get the sound I wanted while playing through these amps and cabs. I failed to mention in my earlier post that I also purchased a Carvin LB75 and it was one of the worst sounding basses I have ever owned. I owned two Spectors and didn't like them either. I sold it one week after I bought it. The only positive is that I made $700 on the sale. Tone is subjective. We all have our own idea of what sounds good. I currently use a 2011 American Fender Jazz Deluxe which is by far the best sounding and best playing bass I have ever owned. I also have an American Fender Standard Precision. I like it but I am not as happy with it as I am with the Jazz. I honestly don't expect to play anything other than these two basses.

yeah, I have an 08 fender american standard jazz bass, and all i can say is i am absolutely in love! By far one of the best basses ive ever owned. I also love some the new squier basses they have out. the classic vibe, vintage mod, are both outstanding basses for the price. they sound amazing! I just recently purchased a squier P bass special. all i can say is wow! this thing is just unreal for the price! I can't believe how far squier basses have come in the past 5 years.

So enough rambling. I really think your sound has a lot to do with you as a player. As long as you have half way decent equipment. you are pretty much golden. Yes obviously some stuff is better than others. I have owned great basses, i have owned just ok run of the mill basses. if you have a decent rig, you can make any bass sing.

you are also right aswell. its all preference...i think people often forget..music is art. not nascar, not the NFL or precise science. The reason why there are so many different types of music out there..is because their are so many different kinds of people. everyone is different, thank goodness, or this would be a boring world!

And I've seen videos of Jaco playing Jerry Jemmotts custom built bass through a Peavy and he still sounded like Jaco. If you really want to see all of the elements of tone discussed check out Bryan Bellers DVD.

The problem with mental masturbation is that you never get to climax. We can debate this crap all day and there are many threads on this forum devoted to such. You can tell me what your gear is all day and how much it means or doesn't.

SO!!!! At the people who are debating all of this post links.

Easy Rev! :D I have to agree with you. As far as what we have, or don't have that makes us who we aere . I think everybody goes through the part of evolving where they try to find "THE SOUND", while all they're doing is trying to be what they somehow let others influence. Bass playing comes from the heart. Listen to all the greats and pay attention. They have something personal to say through their music, which makes them unique individuals.

Sometimes people can't accept, or won't accepet who they are. Should I be playing my Jazz or precision or Squier, through my Kustom or Fender amps, i let me come through.

I think i know you well enough to know you've found yourself.

Keep on keepin' on and don't let them get to you!

I am with the "some basses don't get a good tone" people. I've weeded out several from my stable over the past few years. Okay--I guess maybe one can take a bass that doesn't have good ringing quality and try to get it to honk a bit . That's good. I tend to sell them. But that's nice and who cares what I do? I mean really. Whatever floats your boat is good for you. One mans medicine is another mans poison. Two birds in hand is like one in the bush. A half empty gallon in one hand and six in the other.
I hope I didn't kill the thread.

There are basses out there that just don't have "it"' i was all pumped up about the Anerican Specials until I played them. I won't discuss finish ot quality. Of maybe a dozen i trire, Jazz and Precision, only two sounded half decent.

And for the record! I care what you do. You're the only American to receive the Gustav Flemmlenson Award. That says a lot.

Threads don't get killed, they rot and die.
