I believe that's the opti-grab. It's there so you can easily lift the bass into playing position.

That's there because of the way it's cut. The wood blank comes down the line to a machine that comes down, inserts a holding mechanism in said hole securing it, while the body shape is made.

This may help.

I was being a smartass. The opti-grab was a reference to "The Jerk" with Steve Martin.

I've got a hole, more of a tunnel in the inner neck pocket of my Jazz Plus. I'm wondering if it was sent back to the factory to lighten the load, cause the Ash is also refinished(by Fender obviously).

Maybe they forgot to fill the tunnel hole with walnut, like some I've seen(like the other corner of the bass).

From what i can find. most of the made in USA standard jazz basses have this hole. so it must be a factory thing. like oxfan was saying.

Different hole. The tunnel I have is in the corner of the neck pocket. I can stick almost the whole length of an ink pen into it. The tunnel runs almost all the way to the neck pickup. It's about as wide as the flat end of a nail.

Pics would help...but, I'm really only wondering if this has happened with other basses/guitars. It could be a modification..but, it looks factory to me. It does seem to help the upper registers of the neck to sing, being in the middle of the thickness of the bass.

I'm still thinking about going fretless with this bass....

wow, yeah that is a little strange. maybe its just a defect that no one happened to pick up on at the factory. or maybe they figured, well its not going to effect the bass. so lets just let it go. or maybe in production it was fine.. maybe there was a wood knot there. and fell out some somewhere down the production line...It could be 1,000 things. If the bass plays and sounds fine..i wouldn't even worry about it!

From what I understand it is there for the CNC machines to better able do their job in production. Strats and Teles have similar holes for the same reason.

i would have gone into more detail but, I figured, keep it simple. Makes you wonder how they made instruments bfore CNC machines. Production is the name of the game now.

Now that I'm on my soap box, when quanity is job 1, quality suffers!

CNC ROUTER HOLE. They are in different spots on different models. Some of the Japanese Fenders have a rectangular one. Either way they are a stabilization point for the CNC machine processing.
