Im new to Fender basses and to the forum. Need some help here please.
Im reading that the Jazz bass has a thinner neck...that appeals to me and my smaller hands...But I want a bass with the ultimate fat bottom end I can get and seems the P bass holds that title. How do you Jazz bass players like the bottom end you're getting out of you basses? What is Active vs. Passive? Will this make a difference in what Im looking for? Thanks.. forgive the ignorant questions too...thanks

you can get pretty low bass out of the jazz neck pickup. aslo, fjbass is right, the amp you are playing through, the strings you use, can make all the difference too!

Honestly..the best thing to do is go to your local music store who carries fenders. and play the same series jazz bass, and the same series p bass side by side on the same amp. thats your best bet.

Welcome to the Fender Forums. First of all, there are no ignorant questions.

As far as comparisons, you're talking about two different animals. I own both and my Jazz has a great low end. Repeating what was already said, amps, string and set-up will be factors too. I also recommend SansAmp boxes. They will make any rig sound awesome. I runn it through a Crate 25 for some rehersals and it cerries very well, through my Kustom, KB 100, it roars.

My best advice to you would be to play as many basses as you can and, be patient. Discover what you really want.

Just as a sidenote, i only play passive basses.

Goo luck!

Thanks all.
I just got back from my local music store and played an American Jazz Standard and an American P Standard side by side, same amp for about 2 hours. I have to say, with my "drummers" ears, I liked the sound of the jazz as well as the feel of the neck better, not much better, but better than the P.
Heres my amp situation and why I've ended up at this point. I've been playing through a Hartke 500 with a Hartke 4 10xl cab. Im 56 now and just cant lug that big cabinet around anymore. Our bass player showed up the other night with, and we all laughed till we heard it, a 10" cabinet and a transistor radio looking amp. A Genz Benz 10" shuttle... He did say He put a 4ohm speaker in the cabinet but this thing ROCKED....very nice low end too to my surprise. And it weighs about the same as a loaf of bread. Well, I borrowed the same thing in the 12" cab model to use on a gig in a large autotorium. Well needless to say, this rig didnt carry the huge room well. I will add another 12" cab to this that will boost me up to 660 wats and that should fix things. I hope!! Some of it is my bass, an Alvarez micro short scale, so Im here discussing Fender basses. I may end up adding to my existing 12" cab a 15" instead...thinking here that will help even more with the bottom...

Definitely agree with Zod concerning the DiMarzio Area J or Ultra Jazz Pickups. I installed the DP149's on my J-Bass about 3 months ago and had to notify the local USGS earthquake monitoring station that the 2.0 on the Richter Scale was coming from my practice room. Take a look at the Tone Guide about half way down the linked page below. If you have any loose fillings in your teeth, get those taken care of BEFORE you order the DiMarzios...

You can also try plucking up by the end of the neck.

There is a huge difference how the middle (mid-range) tonal part of the instruments sounds when you compare the p-bass and the j-bass. I agree with most other folks, the other variables will drastically shape and ultimately influence the sound. This jazz is more flexible but the precision does seem to have a thicker more aggressive mid-range was just the nature of the engineering.
