Hi. Firstly big high from Australia. Cool forum!!

I have had my 69 jazz for 15 years without any trouble at all until yesterday. When i plugged in i noticed my neck pickup has lost about half of its volume and kinda sounds twangy like a dodgy bridge pickup. Everything looks OK with the wires and wondering if this could be a pickup or pot problem. Any ideas???

Here is my baby.

It could be the volume pot , but normally you hear a noise, scratch, when turning knob on a defective pot. Bass should be connected to the amp to hear the noise.

Do this test and tell us what's append .

Also it could be a bad solder on volume pot or on the pickup itself, the eyelets.

Perform some continuity checks with a DVM to find out what went south. And do not ignore the possibility of an open or partially-open coil on the neck pickup. If this is the case, I'd recommend having the pickup re-wound rather than replacing it. That's a beautiful vintage Jazz Bass -- keep it all original to the maximum extent possible.

Thanks for the replies. I would never put any other pickups in, I like to keep it original down to the last screw.

I'm not getting any reading from the pickup when set to 20k(ohm). When set to 200m (volts) I get 2.5.

The pot does not sound scratchy at all but doesn't feel as smooth as the other one. I think I'll just put another pot in tomorrow and see what happens.

If you get any reading directly AT the pickup , not on the jack , problem is the pickups or solder on the pickup's eyelets. Don't need to put another pot. It is not the pot.

Try to set your multimeter on higher scale than 20Kohms to see if you can have any reading. Try all scales if you have no reading. You should read something because your pickup is working litlle bit, you have some sound . And sound = x ohms for shure.

Firstly, you do need to keep it original down to the existing solder joints.

Secondly, get it to a qualified tech.

If it needs rewinding, then you have to desolder but I wouldn't until absolutely certain.

I bypassed the pot and wired straight to the jack and still the same problem so in my opinion it is the pickup. I still can't get a reading off the pickup. I've tried all the ohm settings.

My nearest qualified repairer is 3 hours away. I'm OK with a soldering iron and don't really care if all the joints aren't original.

Yes you do a good test, before removing pickups, can you reheat with solder iron NOT GUN the two wire at the pickup. They should be soldered on two eyelet where the pickups'small wire are. You see what I mean.

if you can reheat and do a sound test after.

If you can't get an Ohm reading then you have a coil break somewhere and it will have to be rewound or replaced. I'd rewind it.

I don't know where you are located, however rewinding is probably the way to go here. If you can't locate a shop capable of rewinding nearby you can go the mail route. I'd suggest seeing the multiple links to pickup rewinding shops on my site on this page: http://brotherdave.com/add_parts.htm

Of all the rewinding by mail sources I know about, Brandon Wound is the upstart and therefore the most affordable for rewinding/repair. They will be at least until the word gets around and they make a name for themselves. Most online custom pickup makers charge about the same to rewind one as they charge for a new one but Brandon is the exception to that, at least right now. You can possibly find a local rewinding capable shop that can do it for less, but a 6 hour round trip at today's gas prices makes postage a far more attractive option.

Brandon will rewind it for $25. I don't think anyone else will beat that, even local.

.

Pickups give half volume so coil is not open. And ohms reading must be avalaible. I can't understand why Shayno have no ohms reading .
There are something incomplete or wrong in these tests.

Shayno , what kind of multimeter you have ? Please don't say just "a good one" . Is your multimeter 's probes are good ? Can you read zero ohms when probes are connected together ?

And the 2.5 millivolts you read ? You can't read MV unless you play the bass. No playing bass = no output= no millivolts.
I wish you answer these questions.

That's why I suggest to rehat pickups eyelet. I had this kind of problem few year ago and I fix it

I tried reheating the eyelets and no go. I've sent the pickup to be repaired, thru my favorite shop. They've said they will also check out the eyelets.

My multimeter is a cheapy :) I get a reading from other pickups.

Thanks for the advice guys!!! I'll let you all know happens when it returns
