Hey guys,

I'm new to these forums but happy to be with people that I can talk to about music and basses.

I ordered a set of Joe Barden J-Style 4 Pickups to be made for me and shipped out. They should hopefully arrive in the next day or so and wanted to see if any of you have ever heard or used these pickups before? Is there anything I should look out for on install? How do they sound? They were recommended to me but there isn't much on-line about them but the few people that I've met that know about them say they are great. Ive been trying to put together a Fender Jazz bass taking all the best parts that I could find/afford to put on it so that its exactly the way that I like it and decided to add these PUP's to the mix. I'm interested to hear what you have to say about these and if I should stick with them or switch to something different. I play mostly Classic Rock, Rock, and alternative.

Not sure if this has ever been asked seeing as I am new to this forum but hopefully it hasn't and if it has I am sorry for the repeat but would still be grateful for comments.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. Never used these pickups. Just wanted to say welcome! Good luck with your project. I think the original design using the rail pickups was done for guitar by Bill Lawrence. So far as I know he never did a bass version at all. So let us know how they work for you.

Yea there isnt a whole lot On-line about the Joe Barden Bass PUP's. There is a ton about his guitar PUP's but only a little on these but the ones that I found said they were excellent and I really wanted to get something that was different then most people have or are using. I thought for sure though that someone here would have heard of or used them before.

I'm also looking to get a quality used American jazz bass neck. Do you know of a good place on the Web to find one that is reputable and not over priced? This is the last piece to my puzzle.

There are a few things you can do.

1. Buy a used neck on ebay. These usually cost about the same as a whole bass though.
2. Buy an entire used bass, remove the neck and part out the rest. It is surprising how much you can recover doing that and in the end it can make the neck much less expensive.
3. Visit guitar shows in your area and ask the dealers there.
4. The Wermoth aftermarket necks are really nice. You'll have to add a decal if you want one. You could use one of those until you find a vintage Fender neck.

They look unique. I'm sure the one positive is not having to worry about pole pieces lining up with the strings.

I have a set of hum cancelling Fralins that I really like, and sound close enough to single coils for my liking.

It's those pickups you're googling around?

I finally got them in and they are amazing! They didnt lose anything from what a single coil should represent but they have a lot more even distribution on sound and volume across all strings and it seems like quite a bit more depth and clarity to the sound. These are by far the best pickups I have ever played/heard compared to all the stock american fenders and other brands of Bass's that I've tried. Some of my friends have some of the other aftermarket pickups but I still find these to be much better for depth of sound, clarity, tone, silent to play, harmonics, range, everything. I would recommend these to anyone that isnt happy with their stock pickups or is looking for more. All the claims that Joe Barden make on their website live up to what you end up getting. Everyone that I play with and everyone that has heard them cant believe how good they are and are asking about them for themselves.

Good to hear they worked out for you...I came really close to pulling the trigger on them. We need pics now.

I'll post pic's once I'm done with everything that I am doing to my bass. I am waiting for my new warmoth neck to come in so that I can put that on with my new tuners and already put on a baddass II bridge and am thinking about adding the chrome pick-up covers over both the bridge and neck also adding a thumb rest. Hopefully I'll get everything done in the next few weeks and then post some pic's for you with and without the covers. But as it stands right now even without my new neck and tuners added my bass sounds F'ing amazing and I cant put it down. If you came close to pulling the trigger on these pick-ups you definitely need to go back and reconsider if it isn't to late and you already bought something else.

The Bardens will sound good ...lot's of highs if they are anything like the strat PUP i bought years ago .....not sure how i got into that? maybe cause Danny Gatton used em .....anyhow IMO, they are no better than a Duncan or Dimarzio replacement ....the bardens are all rail style i think.

Based on my impression of the strat pup i bought, i prolly wouldn't buy them again ...too zingy for me! uppermids and highs...

I actually called there and talked to Joe Barden on the phone ...a bit of a wing nut ..i wanted his opinion on mixing his pup with what i already had ....he said i'd be trying to do my gigs all on his pup LOL.....i don't think so .....the mix at the time was a barden strat bridge and two fender noiseless in the middle and neck.

When you say depth/clarity, do mean it is more modern/hi-fi sounding? How warm would you describe the tone you're getting now?
