In the 70s all Fenders were US made. It should also say on the headstock (where the tuners are at the end of the neck) face under the Fender sticker logo or on the back of the shiny metal plate where the neck meets the body on the backside of the bass. Bro Dave or someone else could probably tell you exactly where it'd be on a 73, but those are the two places to check. Later models sometimes had the MADE IN THE USA on the back of the headstock, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case in the 70s.

73 cereal number is on the neck plate.

Okay I can't resist-- if you want to know if your bass is American or Japanese- say something to it in French and see if it understands you. :D

I have a '72 Jazz and no where on the bass does it say Made in USA. But than again, there was no need to since they were all made in the US.

Now that's just ridiculous! Everybody knows the only way to determine where the guitar was built is to say something in Portugese! How embarressed will he be when his bass just looks at him weird and won't answer?
