One of my nicest things I would expect from a dream J-Bass is a post-2010 American Deluxe neck with 22 fanned frets. Two Super 55 split-coils in a reverse angled fashion, Audere 3-band preamp, Hipshot bridge and a sleek ash body round out the package. Yet I saw Dingwall making such Jazz Basses with those Novax fanned necks though I wish Fender would come up with a similar design.

Modern Player Jazz - he he, good call. I have one on order as we speak. As for the fat frets - my first real bass was an old jazz copy that had extremely wide but low frets. It played like a dream and just about everyone who played it was like "wow, great action!". The guitar tech at the local git shop dubbed it "The Slinky Bass" because of how nice it was to play. I'd still have it if some blankety-blank hadn't stolen it along with a Strat and several other items.

From the other thread too, you very well have described a Modern Player. I have a Squier VM Modified Jazz that the neck radius is non-existent. Hope it works out for you.

Reinforced maple J neck with rosewood fretboard
Alder P body (no pickguard)
2 Hum cancel Jazz pickups (Super 55s?)
Fender TBX tone control and 500k volume pots
Vintage style reverse tuners and grooved bridge
Graphite nut
Transparent color finishes with matching headstock

Who will it be, Fender custom shop or Warmoth?... 8)

oxfan, did that Sqiuer VM come from the factory with no radius, or was that part of the modification?

p.s. does anyone know if there is a purpose to the radius on some fingerboards? I always assumed it was just a personal preference thing but I find that flat fingerboards are faster and easier to bend notes on.

My VM is just as it came from the factory. the arguement remains, which is the right bass? I always advise, play every instrument you can get your hands on, as there are no two alike. When I first played a VM Jazz, i was blown away, over a few months, I played six of them and every time I liked them, a lot.

Point is, there will be trade-offs on different basses. My VM is created in the image of a '70's Jazz, heavy, and fairly uncomfortable to hold, that's what drew me to it. just like the REAL Jazz basses I actually owned back in the day. What are it's downsides? Thye neck radius isn't there, it's pretty thick too. the pickups don't have the power of my MIM Jazz, but they do have great tone. I run through a SansAmp Bassdriver so it's not an issue.

As well as playing every available bass you can, be patient or you'll end up with a collection like the rest of us.

I've always preferred heavy basses over featherweights as the sustain is usually better. Maybe I should commission a custom-made bass out of granite or concrete. Anyway, I already have a collection but recently I've been paring it down to my faves. I'm currently down to my '51 P reissue with a Bass Lines pickup, an active J, a Dano Longhorn and a '56 Musicmaster. I don't like shortscales much but I play some in a retro surf band so the Musicmaster and Longhorn do get some use. I also have an old Epiphone hollowbody and a Yamamha fretless that I've been trying to sell. Meanwhile... I'm still waiting for my Modern Player Jazz.

I actually have mine. It's a Fender Steve Bailey Jazz. I always said that if Fender made a 24 fret 6 string bass I would buy one. Lo and behold I got one of the last ones.

Yeah the Steve Bailey Jazz 6 string was a nice bass, I guess they stopped making them when his contract with Fender ran out........Funny thing though almost to the day that Fender retired the Steve Bailey model ....his new 6 string model endorsed by Warwick popped up in the January issue of Bassplayer & has since been advertised in every issue...... :)

And the Fender one was never advertised. I didn't know if it was simply because his contract was up or if it was do to lack of interest. Usually if Fender makes something a little "Non-Fender" it doesn't catch on.

Part of me want's the Warwick one too. Not that I'm a Steve Bailey wannabe so much as I also love Warwicks and love the asymetrical neck profile and string spacing on the Fender.

I was at GC last night and tried out an Ibanez 6. I thought about getting one while I was waiting for my Fender to come. I'm glad I didn't I wasn't too crazy about the string spacing on it. To me the Fender is just like a Cadillac. Smooth, classy and comfortable.

Rev J

Prior his endorsement deal with Fender, Steve played Aria, Ibanez and Michael Kelly basses. His Aria Pro II signature models were available with 4, 5 and 6 strings, in fretted and fretless versions.

Image

Bass granny Carol Kaye was associated with the 4-string fretted version for years.

Too bad that's an Ibanez in the pic.

I would have a like a darker sonic blue Jazz body with a gold sparkle on it with seymour duncan quarter pounders with the stacked 60's knobs. Painted to match head stock with a strip of purple heart wood down the back of the birdseye maple neck and have it slim like Geddy's model. Satin nitro finish on the neck and nitro on the body with gold hardwear and purple heart wood inlays on the neck.

Your silver sparkle jazz would make for a nice dream bass.

Wrong- I've changed my mind. I'm going with Zack Danko.

surf green on a 60s body . . . white pearl guard, maple/maple, chrome hardware . . . will probably have to be a warmoth alder body, no one is willing to let a MIA body go for $165 or less.
