I found this old Fender Jazz Bass at a recycle shop. It is missing its decals and pickguard but it plays well. Serial is L06195 and I ran it through a decoder and it seems to be from '63 pre-CBS. Are these worth anything since I got it for $60?
Also, how can I find out the correct colour for the pickguard plus where to find correct decals etc.

All help appriciated!

Anyone who says "I ran it through a decoder and it seems to be from 63 pre CBS" and then asks "are these worth anything?" and is doing this on the Fender Forums OBVIOUSLY PROBUBLY knows exactly two things- 1. he knows that yes it is worth anything and 2. he knows whether or not he's just pulling everyones leg.

Also to find the correct color for the pickguard you probably won't find that on the FENDER FORUMS.

Sorry I'm not trying to smash a newbie but come on - I can't be the only one who thinks this is "fishy" !! HA!!!!

And if for some reason it's not fishy it's at least grainy. So sorry if that's the case. Don't hate.

Anyone who ...

Well, actually when I saw it first I though that it was a Fernandes but I took a closer look and saw the outlines of the Fender decal and though it must be worth something(because it was a Fender) so I bought it. Then I took it home and tried to decode it and it said `63 Jazz Bass but I just couldn`t believe that such a valuable guitar would be sitting in a small secondhand store but so it seems. It`s missing its knobs, pickguard etc. and it was just so dirty so I can see why it was so cheap.

The clerk said that he had no idea where from and what kind of guitar it is.

And I`ve got pics if someone is interested.

Well, what`s this forum then for if not knowing about Fender-guitars?

AFAIK, the L-serialed Jazz Basses used a brown tortoise-shell 11-screw pickguard.

CONGRATULATIONS on the find of the month!

Authentic. Fender. 1963. Last true "golden era" year. As is right now I'd said Fair condition. If the missing parts were there I'd bump it to Good condition. But only if that is the original paint and solder joints of course.

It originally came with a RED tortoise guard. Finger rest/tugbar and knobs too. I can not tell if the tugbar is still there. Also the pickup cover and bridge cover are both missing. Assuming the case is missing too. Knobs are no problem to find.

As it is, I'd say that is the best $60 anyone ever spent at that shop. Take your $60 and multiply it by say, 50 to 85 times. That is what I see it being worth as it is right now.

Here are two original factory black ones:

Here is one I know of for sale for $25,000 USD right now, it is NEAR MINT and even includes original hang tags:

You have to wonder why anyone would take the headstock decal off. Weird. Perhaps they had a mind to refinish the headstock due the cigarette burns? Who knows why people do stupid things!

Decals are obtainable. However it won't be exactly like the original. So you'd need to have a restoration expert refinish the headstock facing or it will never look right. I would recommend Gord Miller. Custom color Jazzes had painted headstocks but black ones didn't! Very interesting isn't it? The refinish specialist will have the procedure to get the replacement decal. Or if you want to go through that process yourself contact Fender using this info and follow their instructions:

In order to verify this as authentic would need pot codes and neck codes.

Just checked and that serial number is not entered as a stolen instrument in the USA. I wondered about that.

Okay so I guess I'm skeptical when someone says they bought a 63 Jazz bass for $60. Can you blame me? And once I'm skeptical I may just be sarcastic a little.- hence the finding info thing. AND you posted pics so............ great. The thing I noticed was the position of the strap button. Is there more than one hole in the top of the horn?

I once bought what was said to be a 66 P bass and it turned out to be a 66 neck and the rest of it was wrong . So it happens..... You definately got the luck of a lifetime if it all matches up. Nice.

Can't blame Stroker for being skeptical. However if this all happened as OP said, it is certainly the find of the week.
