Did you do it because the necks are smaller on the Jazz and more fitting for you?
Just wundrin'. Have always played P's but my left hand is bothering me now.

well....i've been a Jazz user, owned 2 '62 re-issues for 10 yrs solid and swapped to a Precision because i was getting left hand issues playing on small thin weedy necks day in day out.
I was getting constant pains from gigging and practicing and considered giving up alltogether when a friend of mine suggested playing on a bigger neck,i thought this was a dumb idea, but i gave it a go and yeah it really did work in releaving the pain in my left hand. I do miss the sound of a Jazz tho,but a J pup n pot install will cure that.

I like both type basses and have about an equal number of each.

I think if your thumb joint etc is going to start giving you problems after many years of playing- (it tends to come and go for me--) I don't think it matters what kind of bass you play. If it's going to act up it just will.-- that's my experience with it.

G&L and Stingray V to a Fender RB V. For while, I had a 64 P on loan, that was an awesome sounding bass. In the very distant past I had some P-Basses over the years and one Jazz. I just didn't have a clue of what I had.

My first Fender was a Precision. I later switched to a Jazz. Over the years I have owned many different brands including Ibanez, Alembic, Spector, Musicman, Carvin, Schecter, and G & L. I now own an American Precision and an American Jazz. I like them both equally but find the neck on the Jazz to be more comfortable. After more than 30 years of playing and experimenting with different brands I can't imagine ever using anything else other than Fender.

If you could be specific about what type of pain you're experiencing it would help. As far as the differences between necks go, I would say it's negligible above the 5th fret. It might vary somewhat depending on which year Jazz you're talking about. The Marcus Miller 4-string has a very thin neck to my hands, as do some of the Squiers. Getting back to the hand pain, I would recommend positioning your bass so that you can do the majority of your playing so that you have a straight line more or less from your elbow to the knuckle of your middle finger. Bad things happen to muscles and tendons when your playing position forces your wrist into an angle out of alignment with your forearm, and it only gets worse if you maintain that position for long periods. You can actually experience premature fatigue as a result.

As for Jazzes vs PBs, I like Jazzes myself. They seem more balanced. I've never had a Jazz bass nose-dive on me, but have had a couple PBs do that. And obviously with two pickups you're going to get more tonal variation.

for the best nose dive example from a Jazz = try a stock 1997 USA Jazz Deluxe.

I tried to switch years back because of my fondness for players like Geddy Lee, Jaco Pastorius and Bobby Vega but could never get into the feel and sound like I did with my Precision styled bass. I like my Geddy Lee Jazz for what it is but I'm more at home with the overall tone and feel of a P.

I've never really been a fan of Jazz basses for a lot of reasons.

Though I've played Precisions or over forty-five years, a couple of years back I decided I needed a personal Jazz "just because" and I bought a new American Standard. There are lots of features about the American Standards I don't like to begin with, but this was just a very poor example on top of that. There were no more in stock for an exchange so it went in the closet. I'll eventually dump it.

BUT...when the Highway Ones were supposedly "discontinued," a bunch of guys on TalkBass found a price-matching deal on a sale and we wound up getting them for $429, after a long backorder. The example I got was superb -- a two-piece body that fit properly, clean alignment and all the intangibles that make for a great bass. I swapped to a vintage bridge and flats and sold off the BAII for $150 and the same day nearly blew off my pinky on my fretting hand in a pressure-washer accident.

After neurosurgery and a long recovery period, I find that I'm not quite ready for the Precision neck, but I can manage the Jazz all right.

So, the Jazz is my invalid bass for the time being.

Yeah, what Mokolo said right up to the Geddy Lee is pretty right on from my point of view also. I like both J's and P's but there is no point in me buying any more J's when I can get a P.

Bezmotivnik, I injured my hand once. I was attaching fire hoses to fire department tanker trucks to fill them up during a house fire when a hose connector flew off and hit my left hand. It jammed my left index finger so badly I couldn't use it to play for over a year and the pain didn't stop for a long time after that, so I feel for ya and know what it is like.
