I have been playing bass since 1978. My first bass was a Washburn B20. It was a nice looking bass but I soon realized that it didn't sound the way I wanted. In 1979, I sold it and bought a 1974 Fender Precision. In 1981, I traded it for a 1972 Precision. That bass was traded for a 1978 Jazz with a Sienna Sunburst finish in 1982. In 1984, my drummer stole the Jazz bass and traded it for an Alemibic. In the late 1990's, I started playing Ibanez. I always wanted another Fender so I bought a 1978 Jazz online. The seller claimed it was all original. When I received it, I realized that it had been modified and sold it. Over the next few years, I tried Ibanez, Music Man, Alembic, Carvin, Shecter and Spector. However, at various times, I also purchased Fenders. I was recently speaking with a friend of mine who mentioned that he always seems to go back to Fender. I told him that I am the same way. In the past few weeks, I bought a used Fender American Standard Precision, 3 tone sunburst with rosewood fretboard and a new American Deluxe Jazz in a Wine finish with rosewood fretboard. It seems that no matter what I do, I always come back to Fender. I have an endorsement deal with another manufacturer but I have finally learned my lesson. I will never use anything other than an American made Fender. The tone, sound, quality and features are second to none.

The only time I haven't used Fenders is when i couldn't afford them and settled for something less, Peavey (which was a nice bass), Yamaha, and my first bass, a Coral (made by Danelectro). I am the proud owner of a Precision, a Jazz and a Squier Vintage Modified. The Squier is a great playing bass.

I agree that fender is the best.

Rockbassist, I couldn't agree more :!:

It is no coincidence that is was and still is the most recorded bass (or it's knock-offs) in the music industry. For reasons you aforementioned, a Fender bass for a professional session bassist it is almost a required tool-of-trade. With any talent, it is an idiot proof tone tool. Super simple to acquire a useable musical sound.

oxfan, nice picture of your musical family. :D

Thank you. If you'll notice my profile picture, that's the Stratocaster my wonderful wife bought me for Christmas. All the handprints and smeared chrome on the basses are compliments of my not yet three year old grand daughter. She never comes that we don't play the bass.

I bought my 74 P bass in 79. So I've had it the whole time. I've never gone away from Fender once I started. I have tried other basses and it was a waste of time. So I have almost all Fender basses in my collection. I have an Epi Explorer , a Garside one of a kind, and a Hamer Explorer but I really don't play them. I grab one of my Fenders and head on out to the gig or practice. I have an I banez. The cheap trb-100--(1995) it is a very good bass believe it or not . I still choose Fender. I really don't want anyone to me playing an Ibanez. I don't have alot good to say about MM either. Otay !!!!! :)

Basses I have owned in order and some reasons why I got rid of them.
Washburn B20 (1979 -1980) This was my first bass and I really wanted a Fender.
1974 Precision (1980 -1981) Wanted more punch so I bought a Jazz.
1978 Jazz (1981-1984, stolen by my drummer)
1982 Precision ( 1984 - 1995) Deal was too good to pass up $280
1986 Telecaster (1995 - 1999) Bought off a co-worker who needed money. Paid $150. Didn't like it and sold it for $700
1999 Ibanes EDB 600 (1999 - 2002) Great bass for the money but felt funny playing an inexpensive bass.
1999 Ibanez 4 string (1999 - 2001) Had another 4 string and this one wasn't being used.
2000 Ibanez 5 string (1999 - 2002) Stopped playing in a band with alternate tuning so I sold it.
1976 Precision (2002 - 2008) paid $300 sold for $1,000.
1978 Jazz (2002 - 2002) Bought on ebay and seller misrepresented it.
2002 Music Man Stingray (2002 -2003) Sold it because of dead spots in fretboard.
1995 Alembic Epic 5 String (2003 - 2010) Great bass but wasn't using the Low B as much as I thought I would.
1997 Alembic Epic 5 String (was offered almost twice what I paid so I sold it
1997 Alembic Epic 4 String (2010 - 2011) Sounded different than the 5 string
2004 Carvin LB75 (2010 - 2010) Paid $250 sold it for $750 one week later. Couldn't seem to find a good tone.
1977 Precision (2010 - 2011) Paid $800, sold it for $1,500
2010 Schecter Extreme (2011 - 2011) Played great but the tone was aweful.
2010 G & L Tribute (2011 - 2011) Bass sounded great but was very heavy.
2004 Spector Euro Rebop (2011 - 2012) Couldn't get the action low without buzzing. Active circuit was so overpowering that it often distorted.
2009 Spector Euro 4 LX (2011 - 2012) Didn't play it very much and sold it to buy a Fender.
2008 Fender American Standard Precision (Currently own, padi $600 with the hardshell case)
2011 Fender American Jazz Deluxe (Currently own. Got it new, traded Spector Euro 4LX)

I get bored but always come back to Fender. I can't imagine using anything else than what I currently have. I am finally happy with my tone. The Jazz Deluxe is the best playing and best sounding bass I have ever played. Not completely happy with the Precision though. I like very low action and I can't seem to get it without buzzing between the 5th and 9th frets. Other than that it sounds great.

The only issue I have with Jazz basses is that they are noisy when I take my hand off teh strings. This has been a problem with every Jazz I have ever owned regardless of the amp I play through or the venue. You would think that after 60 years of making basses, they could figure it out.
