Hi all-

My "dream bass" has always been a "natural finish" 70s style Jazz Bass with walnut fretboard. An original was out of the question, financially. New re-issues seem to sell across the internet for $1799.00 at discount.

I found a used, mint, 2003 re-issue with original case, all the goodies (including the chrome "ashtrays"-unmounted), and there's not a mark on this beast. New strings and setup included $1199.00.

So....is there any "quality" issues inherent in a 2003 vs. a 2011 (or 2012)? Or should I just go ahead, pull the trigger, and save $600.00 I can use on a better amp?

TIA for any advice.

We always like to see pictures of the basses discussed on this forum. Not only to get to see the bass in question but also, to help new members discern a real Fender bass from a fake.

If you are sure that the 2003 Fender is legit, I would say go with the used one a save the $600. But that is just my opinon.

Good luck with your choice.

Thanks- I guess I'll buy the used one, and post pics once I get it.

I finally got the 2003 '75 re-issue bass! Only thing I did was add a chrome pick guard. Here's the pics:

Man that is some chrome overload on a Jazz Bass!
A chrome pickguard with the Jazz covers installed, Wow

It really looks cool, if you can handle cleaning off all of the fingerprints! LOL!

It really looks like a nice bass and I think you will be very happy with it.
I think you made the right choice because that bass is virtually a brand new bass. It wasn't played or abused, so have fun playing it.

Thanks! To me, keeping the Chrome Fender cups and adding the chrome pick guard makes the bass look like a '59 Cadillac with tailfins to me! And that's just the way I roll. I find it very therapeutic to polish chrome or aluminum. You should have seen the parade of motorcycles that have come and gone from my garage! "If it doesn't move.....CHROME it!"

First of all, I am not a fan of reissue basses. However, you are not going to find a difference in quality between a 2003 and 2011 American Made Fender. I would save the $600 and buy used.
