A new Fretless is born! Meet the new member of the family!

It started out as a plain black 2011 Fender Jazz Standard Fretless. Got it a couple of weeks ago from Musicians Friend. Replaced the body with a Sunburst one from a 2011 Fender 70's Classic Series Jazz bass. This body has the 70's pickup spacing like my '72 Jazz which I love.

Transferred all the electronics to the new body and added a heavier duty Gotoh 201 bridge. Then topped it all off with a Fender tort pickguard and straplocks. Now I just have to hope all my soldering holds up!

Have the action nice and low and it really plays sweet! Fairly light weight too.

So it is kind of a unique 2011 Fender Jazz!

Yea, the plain black body just did not do it for me! Plus the 3-Color Sunburst on this Classic 70's body is much nicer than the Brown Sunburst offered on the Standard Jazz. Also the bass actually is about 1 lb lighter with this new body.

It sounds great through my Sadowsky preamp box (which I also use with my '72 Jazz).

Your bass would have a serious Jaco "mwah" if you clear-coat the fretboard with a thin layer of epoxy and put a fresh set of stainless steel flats.

Nice looking bass! That Gotoh 201 is a very nice aftermarket high mass bridge option and if you are going to do a bridge swap that is the first one I'd recommend outside the Fender line.

Yeah I agree Dave.. I was recently looking for an after market alternative to Leo Quan's
Badass & was researching the Gotoh201, I was impressed, ......good construction, the saddles are slotted & apparently it's supposed to be a quick easy fit, it's available in three colors (chrome, gold, Black) & here's the best part ......they've got good customer service, this bridge costs half the price of a Badass & they've also got a good informative website.

Mwah from Flats! Would never happen. You need round wounds for that (just like Jaco used). That is all I have ever used on my fretless basses. Flats on a fretless has no punch, but good if you are looking for a upright tone.

FYI: Gotoh is the major hardware supplier for Fender Japan.

The 50th Anniversary Jazz Bass had the 70's pickup spacing you're craving for.

I knew they were a Japanese company but I didn't know they were the hardware supplier for Fender Japan...........Thanks for the info Dave :)

Hey Bassclef great looking Fretless, I wouldn't alter another thing on it ( nice looking '72 fretted Jazz too.. :) )

Interesting. Looking at the 70's Jazz compared to your new standard, it looks like the standard has the bridge pickup placed in the same location as the 70's. The 70's Jazz basses typically had a closer proximity to the bridge.

Along with using flats, that would slightly alter a Jaco tone, if that what somebody was striving for.

Regardless, nice job on the mods. :)

That is because it is not a Standard Jazz body. As I mentioned in the first post I swapped the Standard Jazz body with a Classic 70's Jazz body which has the 70's pickup spacing. I wanted a tone kind of like my '72 Jazz.
