At the mighty, mighty risk of coming across as a OCD clean, shiney freak, do any of y'all ever take nickel polish to your vintage tuning keys to "dress them up?"

any kind of abrasive pollish will remove the plating once they get real old and start losing the plating from years of touching. The finger residue eats the nickel plating and polishing compounds only take more plating off because of how thin it now is--- I will use Smiths polish on my old ones but it just cleans them- it doesn't dress them up.

Overall my old tuners look relic, used up and old.

I use brass polish on all of my old basses and have done so since before there was any notion of relicing instruments.

I always liked the feel of a clean tuner under my fingertips and therefore I have polished tarnished nickel tuners back to a shine of sorts.

I don't think it devalues an instrument to take care of it and the my least favorite part of a reliced bass is the tarnish and corrosion intentionally put on a bass.

"I can only offer my opinion backed up by the facts I think I know."
Now there's a quote I'll use!
So, "Smith's" and brass cleaner are non-abrasive? I'll give it a try.
I don't want the vintage nickel keys to shine like chrome. I would just like to keep them from looking dull and "smudgey" with finger residue.
Yep, I don't think I'd buy a new bass that had tarnished, and even rusty, hardware.
Thanks, Fellas

In addition to owning several Fenders, I also own three Alembics. They recommend Flitz Metal Polish. I have used it for years and never had any problems.
