I am interested in buying this bass from a friend, but want to make sure that it is authentic. The bass does not say made is USA. Does anyone know if Fender made Jazz basses with the strings that feed through the back? He also said that he is unable to find a serial anywhere on the bass even when he took off the neck and pick guard. That makes me a bit skeptical. I thought that Fender always put serials on their guitars... or at least stamped with an employees initials. Any info would be great. I am trying to also figure out what year is was made. Thanks!

P.S. Sorry about the low resolution photos. It's all I have. :(

the pics are too small. I can't really tell what color that is..... fender serial #'s are usually on the neckplate or the headstock front or back and sometimes from Japan on the back of the heel . It's never too hard to find a serial number. If you don't see one anywhere .... something is up....

many Fender basses string thru the back... usually USA models-- and some Japan--

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to get better photos emailed to me. I have not seen this guitar in person so I can't verify that there is no serial. I am hoping that he just can't see it. He is elderly. I have owned 30 or so Fenders and have always been able to locate a serial. I am waiting for some better pictures. When I get them I will post them here. The guitar is about an hour a way and I can get it for $200. It just be worth the trip even if it's Japan made. To me it looks like a nitro finish, but it's hard to tell.

the ferrules on the back of the body have a certain position and size that's pretty un-mistakeable on Fender basses. The ferrules on modern basses are larger than the ones on real old basses. There are alot of other Fender USA/Mex/ Japan particulars that come into play as you may know. You just never know what you'll find out there.

All real Fenders will have a serial number. Many Asian copies WON'T. Thousands of "HOOCH GUITARS" were bought by US servicemen in the Pacific, especially during the Vietnam War. They didn't have serials but were cosmetic knockoffs of Fender, Gibson and other famous instruments sometimes made in huts or hooches by local craftsmen using hand tools. Some full scale manufacturing facilities also existed, especially in the Philippines.

The bass you pictured is a fake Fender.
It has a plywood body, not even Squires use plywood for bodies.

The head stock is the wrong shape and the decal is a reproduction.

It is probably a bass made in the Phillapines and sold to a US serviceman.

If you like it and want to spend $200, realize that it is a fake and judge it accordingly.

Good luck.
