Hello Fender Lounge members,

I have been looking at a Fender Jazz Bass at the local music store for a few weeks now. It is used, and has some nicks on it, but it has a nice sound to it. My only reservation is about the serial number. I have searched the internet looking for a Fender Jazz Bass with a serial number of MN7 + 6 digits (Actual serial number is MN7142654). Everything i have seen online mentions a MN7 + 5 digit serial number. I am wondering if anyone out there can help me out. I don't want to buy it and find out later that it is a fake (or a Squier with a Fender logo on it). Also, the pickups on the bass are from a company "Basslines". I am assuming these are not stock Fender Jazz bass pickups, but i could be wrong. The picture that was on the company's website was removed for some reason. I can email anyone pictures that i have taken of the bass. I do not have these pictures published to the web, so i am not sure how to attach them using HTML code. Again, i have never owned a Fender bass, and i am not sure what to look for to determine if it is legitmate or not. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

This is a perfectly good serial number! When I run it through Guitar Dater Project I get the following:

Guitar Info
Your guitar was made at the
Ensenada Plant (Fender), Mexico
in the Year(s): 1997 - 1998

Fender: Mexico

Fender Mexico was established in on May 5th 1987, Ensenada, Mexico with electric guitar production beginning in 1989. Ensenada facility includes eight buildings, covering more than 200,000 square feet. This includes Electronics, Electric Guitar, Amplifier Cabinet, and String manufacturing. More than 1000 employees are on staff and are supported by the Fender Quality Control team which travels from Corona to Ensenada once a week to help maintain quality. Fender Mexico guitars and amplifiers are made using many U.S. components, again maintaining the highest standards.

Thank you very much! I am going to play it at the store a few more times before deciding, but i am most likely going to purchase it. It might need a little TLC, but for $300, it seems like it will be worth it!

Ahull, that is a pretty good price even with a few nicks. I'd dicker though. So if you find you still want it on your next visit, then you might offer $250 and if they make a counter offer say you'll have to give it some thought and leave. Then offer less than their counter offer was the next time you return. You might get it for less than $300. They probably can take 10 to 15% less than the asking price and still make money. Dicker some!

BrotherDave,

I will definately try to see if i can get the price a little lower. Luckily, the area that I live in has a few local music stores, so there is competition. I have previously played bass in a band about 6 years ago, and recently joined a new one. I have played with an Ibanez (semi-hollow), and a Schecter Omen. Both basses were great, but i always wanted to own a Fender (although some of the Squiers i tried have great sound quality as well). Regardless of how much i can get knocked off pricewise, it seems like a decent deal. Thanks for the help. I will post some pictures once i pick it up.

The music stores in this unflinching place of music stores where I'm at. .... they won't deal with you . That blows and they don't sell as many guitars as I'm sure they'd like to. I'm not talking about Guitar C and Ashy Sams. I mean the other non- chain stores. GUESS WHAT??? when you go back to the store after trying to get a lower price,,,, the guitar will still be there!! Then within a year or so the store is gone. I think it's because they think they absolutely have to have the 100% markup to stay in biz. Maybe so but when you have the Universe Music Centers around-- I would think you need to do something like give in and stay around for awhile. I know there is other stuff involved with keeping an independent music store open other than dropping prices a tad. I have seen more than 10 stores go under in the last ten years around here. What is strange is that a new one opened over in a not so economical area about 30 miles away-- boasting 1000 guitars in stock. 1000!!!!!?????? They won't be there in 3 years. I'd put money on that.

There is some truth to this but retailers will not lower their prices like they did in the past. Years ago, you could negotiate. Now, even GC won't budge. I have worked in retail management for many years. The markup in most guitar stores is only around 15%. Considering most people are buying guitars and basses in the $300 to $500 range, they have to sell a lot of merchandise in order to make a profit. This is why many will not budge on price.

We were talking a used instrument here. Mark up is significantly higher on those. Usually 40 to 50%. GC in Charlotte, NC will negotiate with you on used instruments. Your mileage at your Evil Empire outlet may vary.
