Hey everyone! Haven't been here in a long while.
Guitar polish - Which brand is the best to protect lacquer/nitro finish and and stop the swirling and fading?
In my younger days I loved my basses looking seasoned. Now I'm older and want to protect my newer ones. I understand you shouldn't use silicone-based polishes.
Lizard Spit...bottle or website doesn't state silicone free
Fender Mist & Wipe Finish Enhancer...silicone?
Gibson...states it has a small amount of lacquer for nitro finishes

Second question: My older black '62 Reissue Jazz ('91) has a dulled area where I rubbed too hard with cloth. Can it ever be shiney again if I so wanted?

Thanks for your imput
(didn't know where to place this thread)

Fender used to sell a kit of polishes from Maquiar's (the auto polish prople) but they've sinced discontinued this product :(

Lately I've been using the line of polish's from Planet Waves it's available as 3 polishes:

step 1. RESTORE is a swirl remover step 2. PROTECT is a carnauba polish & step 3. SHINE is a finishing & care polish, they also sell fretboard cleaner called HYDRATE, A LEMON OIL & a string cleaner.........as far as metal polises go ..Gibson has a metal polish that I've yet to try....it's supposed to take care of oxidation......at the moment I use Brasso on chrome guitar parts if needed. :)

Thanks, James for responding.
I have a small pump spray polish by Fender called "Mist and Wipe Finnish Enhancer" that is made for Fender by Meguiar's. It came as case candy with new '62 Reissue. I'm wondering if it contains unwanted silicones.
Do Planet Wave products contain silicones?
When an area on a lacquered nitro finish (my old '62) has become dulled, I'm assuming the top shiney coat has been rubbed off by sweat or wiping too hard with a dry cloth.
Do you think this area can be shined up?
I'm really not this anal...I'm just wondering.

I'm not sure if they contain unwanted silicones? you can find out by contacting your local music store as they probably sell planet wave polishes or go to www.planetwaves.com

Guitar paint is car paint. That is why Fender had a long running deal with the car wax company. Any non-silicone car stuff is ok to use or you can buy Dr. Duck's Axe Wax. Cool name and good stuff that won't hurt any guitar finish new or old. I do not recommend Dr. Duck's for application to rosewood though because it prevents finger oils from absorbing into rosewood.

You can also consider using a household furniture product called "EndDust". It has been an inexpensive 'secret weapon' for guitarists for several decades. BrotherDave and I have used this product and it works very well.

Yeah Endust and canned air to blow pickups and bridges. That is minimalistic cleaning. It works great on black finishes and doesn't leave swirl marks.

Over time, Pledge can cause a waxy buildup the same as on furniture, while Endust cleans, protects and polishes without the waxy component. It also sheds water and other liquids very well just in case you are playing behind chicken wire and beer bottles start heading your way ( remember the Blues Brothers at Bob's Country Bunker ?) :)

I'd been looking into planet wave myself. So you've used it, how do ya like it?

I've only seen carnauba wax in action polishing briar pipes (Peterson, Savenelli, etc.), It seemed to work well there. I hear it's good on surf boards too.

I bought the Planet Waves Express pack in December (steps 1,2 & 3 come in a one time use packet)
I had some light suface scratches on the back of my Geddy Lee bass & wanted to try step 1 Restore to remedy the issue........I searched High & Low for Fender's Maquiar guitar care kit & found out it was discontinued so I gave Planet wave a shot & step 1 Restore did the trick for the surface swirls & button marks on the back of both my Geddy Lee & Marcus Miller basses......I'll be using this product again in the future.

I have to say that this product worked well for me but my basses are in exellent condition as I won't wear belt buckles or anything that may scratch the back of the bass & when putting my bass down I will always make sure I put it on a stand or in a case.
