All,

I am about to order a pastorious Jazz Bass, and I am wondering whether the differences between the Relic and Standard version are just cosmetic, or whether there are actual differences on pick-ups, wood etc which would affect the overall sound.

I would appreciate any feedback on this.

Regards,
Daniel

I own one of the Standard Jaco fretless basses, ..I love it!! great bass! I've also played a Relic model at my local music store, it's also a good playing bass,...though it reminded me a little bit of the Road Worn series basses.....I'd say go with the a brand spankin' new standard model & save some cash as it's way cheaper & then put your own history of dings bumps & bruises on it as you use it.......that's what I'd do :)

The only difference is the relic treatment. Everything else is spec'ed the same. No two instruments are identical of course, however the variables are minimal when you get to this level in the line.

Sorry man, but there is a big difference between the two basses. A biggy is the neck. The Jaco bass has a uncoated Pau Ferro fretboard. The Tribute Relic bass has a epoxy coated Rosewood fretboard just like Jaco's real bass. That by itself will produce a different tone than the Jaco bass.

The Jaco bass sports standard Vintage Jazz pickups while the Tribute Relic bass sports Custom '60s Single-Coil Jazz Bass pickups. Another difference affecting the sound.

Another big difference is the Tribute Relic is a Custom Shop bass. So allot more care and craftsmanship goes into its making. That bass has a unbelievable broken in feel and plays like butter, awesome basses!

Now that said, the Jaco Basses fretted or Fretless are still really nice basses. I've been GAS'n for a fretless for a while now. And they are way less expensive than the Tribute basses. For me, I have a REAL relic bass. My '72 jazz. So I would buy the Jaco bass over the Tribute Relic one.

My advice is spend some time with both if you can. You may find you like one over the other.

Thank you BASSCLEF, was not aware the question posted was a comparison of an Artist Series to a CUSTOM SHOP bass. No need to say "SORRY MAN" because of course there are differences between a Custom Shop bass and a standard production model. I thought he was asking about a relic treatment production A.S. model like a road worn model. I know NOTHING about this custom shop model as I've never even seen one and probably never will. I see all kinds of CS basses at shows but never see one of the Jacos. Either they don't sell many or the people that buy them hardly ever sell them. To me the Artist Series model looks more like TBOD does today than the CS version, but the fingerboard is epoxied on the CS one. I suppose the C.S. one is PRE-SMASH look and the A.S. is POST-RESTORATION look. I think the A.S. one looks way better.

I agree with you Dave .....the A.S. model looks better ( as I mentioned in an earlier post)
I've only ever seen & played 1 CS Jaco Bass at Long & McQuade about four years ago..

I had recently bought the AS model & when I saw the CS model hanging in the store I had to do a comparison......the bass felt nice & played well but I kept saying to myself I think I prefer the Standard model.....I found some of the distressing over the top ( my personal opinion) & though the necks were similar the finish on the back of the neck of the CS model is sanded off.
( if I remember correctly I believe Jaco sanded the back of the Bass of Doom...can't remember were I read this) it felt like a Road Worn Jazz bass.......nothing wrong with that
.......I think I prefer to get a new bass & put my own personal history of scrarches & dings on it..........I was actually playing my AS Jaco bass a few days ago & was thinking to myself .......man this is a nice bass. :)
