Ive got a Fender Jazz Bass on my hands that is supposedly a sixties guitar. It belonged to a customer's father who played it in a dcumented band from after that era. I dont think there is any untoward bahviour going on here.

The problem is that Ive taken the entire guitar apart and cannot find a single serial number or date stamp on it. Its had some customisation done including a poor varnish refin on the neck and a brass bridge put in. I think his father was a bit of a hobbyist which might be part of the problem here.

What Im wondering is if its unusual to have little markings on component parts?

cheers

probably worth checking the date codes on the pots.

Can you post some pics?

If its a genuine sixties Fender Jazz bass, there will be very few markings indicating the date of the bass.
The serial number was originally on the neck plate, but these plates were often replaced or discarded when basses were customized with Brass accessories , which was a big trend during the 70's.

The only actual date stamp was on the base of the neck and it is normally visible when the neck is removed. Often these dates stamps are not visible or are not legible and you have to deduct the age of the bass from pot codes and other features of the instrument.
Very early Jazz basses (1959-1961) had the date penciled on the bass of the neck just like the Fender guitars and basses from the 50's.

Sometimes there is a date penciled under a pickup, to mark the body but I can't say that that was a consistent practice at Fender.

Please post pictures of your bass is you want help in identifying what year it is.
If the original neck and body are present, we should be able to get fairly close in an age approximation. It will depend on how much the bass was modified and how many original parts are still on the bass.

Good luck.
