the Geddy bass is just awsome. I find $1000 a given price for that bass, the one thing that you should do is change the pick ups and you have a great bass :D

I just played one. I didn't want to leave the store without it.

I have to fit it into my budget soon.

The neck is as close to my 66 Jazz as any new bass I have played.

Nice job Fender.

The GL Jazz is simply an awesome instrument. The quality of the Crafted in Japan (opposed to Made in Japan) axes is amazing close, if not dead on, with the American Made. The thiness of the "C" shaped neck allows for fluid movement of your fret hand, and the Leo Quan bridge offers "Bad $@!" sustain. I test drove a number of other jazz basses (American, Marcus Miller, Highway One) before finally picking this one up. The quality compared to the price fit the budget better than these others. Brand new they are running $800 anywhere in the U.S, or about $600 for a good condition one on Ebay. If you are buying it new, WAIT, the next run is suppose to have a tuner upgrade. I don't have any modifications to mine, but Geddy has the tuners upgraded and the finish sanded off the back of the necks on his. For those of you who complained about the finish on the neck being "sticky," I played a Rory Gallgher tribute/replica strat that has the finish sanded off the back of the neck, and I've never felt anything more comfortable or fluid, but I'm afraid to do it to the GL bass as it may wreck the neck. I saw a recent interview with Geddy where he talked about this new mod, but expressed concern that he didn't know how the sanded wood would react to sweat or changes to humidity. For the price, this definatley gets a "Bigger Bang for the Buck" out of the entire Jazz bass line. After playing it the first few months, I realized that I could easily play this bass for the rest of my life...

I was playing around with one in the store and although the price tag said:$799,it said "crafted in Japan" on the back. What's the story on that? The bass sounded awesome with a nice ,thick bottom-end.

What's the difference in regards of MIJ to CIJ? My '87 is an MIJ and it's as good as any MIA or MIM bass out there made by Fender. I really don't know the answer to the difference between MIJ/CIJ. :?:

I just got home with my new Geddy Lee bass.

This is the first new bass I have ever bought. I can hardly contain myself.

Pics to follow.

I tried one out at my local Guitar Center, and have some pros and cons about it. This list is 100% my personal opinion.

Get it if: -Geddy is a major influence in your playing style.
-You like the sound of the pickups (not sure what kind they are, though)
-You like the thinner neck, and/or like to play on the lower 5 frets.
-You're a big classic rock fan: this sounds great playing any classic rock bass lines from the Who to Zep, and so on.

Don't get it if: You're used to the thicker p-bass neck.
-You're looking for versitillity: these pickups sound great, but only produce one sound: Geddy's, even on the low end.
-You like to slap or play funk-like rythems. Between the thin neck and the bridge, slapping is just isn't easy to do on this bass.

Hope this helps a little.

I figure I can still use my other Jazz for the vintage Jazz sound.

I'm pretty sure the Geddy has the vintage reissue pick ups.

I just bought a new GL Jazz and I absolutly love it! Hands down amazing. The tuning keys are distracting but I can deffently get used to that. It's my first Fender but compaired to everything I've tried it felt best to me. If it was ever stolen or mortally wounded I would deffently get it again in a heart beat.

Best bang-for-the-buck !! I played (semi) pro bass for over eighteen years so I've had quite a few nice basses go through my hands. My Geddy Lee bass is now my "go-to" bass guitar. The thin neck is sweet and I've had other basses with the "BadAss" bridge. Super solid.
The only issue I have had (Two years running) is the dash pot for the tone control went south without warning. It was stuck "full on" and I usually EQ from the amp/board so I don't usually mess with it so I'm not exactly sure when it actually failed. I even thought about leaving it that way, but I had to have the neck brought back to specs (normal wear & tear...gig bags suck! lol) so I had the pot replaced and had a different value capacitor installed (200 ohm, I believe, forgive me, I'm a player not a "tech") .This really "opened up" the already great sounding pick-ups and gave it a wider tone range. In fact I now have to "roll-off" it unless I'm looking for a very aggressive "growl". I would not recommend this unless you have problems with the stock unit because it does void the warranty. The tech that did the work remarked that the electrics, parts and solder points in the bass where top-knotch and the workmanship was excellent. The failed pot/cap was probably just a "fluke"and was not an indication of "cheap" guts. This repair could have been made under the warranty, but my nearest authorized Fender tech is about two hours away, and the tech I chose to do the work has years of experience on guitars far more expensive that this (or any of the other ten guitars I own) and did me a fair and reasonable price for all of the work, (plus I think he was "jazzed" to get the chance to "Hot-Rod" and already "Hot" bass) I believe his final description was "...like a Porsce"
Bottom line, I would buy it again!! 'nough said?
